摘要: To increase the yield, p-terphenyl is prepd. by pyrolysis of phenol vapour in a quartz tube at 750 degrees C in a stream of an inert gas. The title cpd. is used in the prodn. of fluorescent and luminescent compsns. and photoemulsions, in the mfr. of thermoactive soluble polyphenylenes and as an intermediate in organic synthesis. The pyrolysis gives p-terphenyl as the main prod. (53% yield) with benzene, water, CO, H, CO2, CH4 and carbonaceous residue as by-prodts. Thus, 35.0g (0.37 mole) phenol was brought to the boil in an evaporator and the vapour was passed through a quartz tube reactor at 750 degrees C in nitrogen at 3-5 l/hr. Unreacted phenol and by-prods. were condensed and recycled into the evaporator. The reaction was continued for 5 hrs. Vacuum distn. of the prodt. gave 2.1g. phenol and 9.0g. (53% w.r.t. phenol) p-terphenyl. The by-prodt. gases contained (%) CO 41.1, H2 5.2, CO2 26.3, and CH4 12.5.
