Modelling Radiocesium in Lakes and Coastal Areas-New Approaches for Ecosystem Modellers: A Textbook with Internet Support

Product Description:

During the last 10 years, there has been a `revolution' in ecosystem modelling. The generality and predictive power of our models have increased in a way that was inconceivable 10 years ago. This book describes a new generation of practically useful models that predict as well as one can measure - if one measures well. And yet, they are driven by readily available driving variables and have a general structure that applies to most types of pollutants in aquatic systems. The major reason for this development is, in fact, the Chernobyl accident. Large quantities of radiocesium were released in April/May 1986 as a pulse. To follow the pulse of radiocesium through ecosystem pathways has meant that important fluxes and mechanisms, i.e., ecosystem structures, have been revealed. It is important to stress that many of these new structures and equations are valid not just for radiocesium, but for most types of contaminants, e.g. for metals, nutrients and organics. This means that the models, methods (of building and testing models) and equations described in this book for lakes and coastal areas should be of great interest also to other ecosystem modellers.
This book will be of considerable interest to: students in radioecology, geosciences and biology; environmental engineers; consultants; administrators and scientists interested in the spread, biouptake and ecosystem effects of chemical pollutants in aquatic ecosystems.

Geology and Geomorphology of Holocene Coastal Barriers of Brazil

Product Description:

This is the first book to cover Holocene geology and geomorphology of the entire 8,500 kilometers of the Brazilian coast. It is aimed at third and fourth year undergraduates, post-graduate students, scientists and managers. It characterizes the coast in terms of holocene geology, geomorphology, oceanographic conditions and the location of the barrier types. Separate chapters outline the types of barrier in each state, beginning in the south and proceeding to the north. Special emphasis is placed on the stretches of coast where the detailed morphology and stratigraphy of barriers has been previously determined. To date the Brazilian coastal barriers have been largely ignored by the international community, especially by north American authors and scientists who generally concentrate on barrier islands. However, the Brazilian coastal barriers display a much wider range of types than is generally assumed. The biggest and most spectacular dunefield barriers in the world exist in Brazil although hitherto completely unknown. This volumes provides a wealth of information on barrier types, evolution and dynamics. It furnishes managers, biologists and botanists with much needed geological and dynamic background of the evolution, functioning and ecosystems of holocene barriers along the entire Brazilian coast.

Environmental Security in Harbors and Coastal Areas

Product Description:

Human experience has shown how great cities, nations, and empires have either collapsed or retired from their predominant stature when natural resources are depleted to an extent that exceeds the ability of the environment to restore or replenish their supply. This book explores the challenges facing coastal areas during the next few decades and the difficult decisions needed to prevent a repeat of the past. Establishing, maintaining or enhancing a sense of environmental security in different coastal regions and improving the management of critical infrastructure will require (i) matching human demands with available environmental resources; (ii) recognition of environmental security threats and infrastructure vulnerabilities; and, (iii) identification of the range of available options for preventing and/or minimizing natural disasters, technological failures, and/or terror actions. This book emphasizes beliefs that the convergence of seemingly disparate viewpoints and often uncertain and limited information is possible only by using one or more available risk assessment methodologies and decision-making tools such as multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA).

Satellite Monitoring of Inland and Coastal Water Quality: Retrospection, Introspection, Future Directions

By Robert P. Bukata

Binding:   Hardcover

Product Description:

Satellite Monitoring of Inland and Coastal Water Quality: Retrospection, Introspection, Future Directions reviews how aquatic optics models can convert remote determinations of water color into accurate assessments of water quality. This book illustrates how this conversion can generate products of value for the environmental monitoring of optically complex inland and coastal waters. The author emphasizes how terrestrial, aquatic, and wetland remote sensing are underutilized tools due to a lack of influential end-usership. He takes a realistic look at this disinterest and examines why it exists, how it can be abated, and the synergies that need to be activated among technologists, scientists, entrepreneurs, policy-makers, and water quality professionals. Offering a guide to possible linkages between scientific products of remote sensing and their application to mandates and priorities of environmental stewards and policy-makers, this book uses the research and science agenda of Environment Canada as a template for generic environmental interests and concerns. It is hoped that this guide presents a compelling case for incorporation of aquatic remote sensing into protocols of ground-based environmental monitoring networks.
