Abstract Published in 2025, the recoiling-slit quantum interference experiment employs optically trapped single rubidium atoms to scatter photons. It claims to physically realize Einstein’s thought experiment of a movable physical slit and supports the principle of quantum complementarity based on experimental observations. Within the framework of the Original Light Theory, this paper strictly distinguishes the microscopic motion of individual photons and the statistical characteristics of photon ensembles. From the perspectives of acting environment, spatial scale and microscopic coupling mechanism, we demonstrate that the single rubidium atom scattering system only shares approximate mathematical appearances with the traditional double-slit system with physical wall thickness, while their physical essences are entirely different. This experiment artificially eliminates core physical conditions in real double-slit systems, including photon oscillation, slit channels and continuous momentum coupling between photons and slit walls, which constitutes typical conceptual substitution. Fundamentally, it is merely a recoil scattering experiment between single photons and isolated rubidium atoms, and cannot be equated with physical double-slit interference experiments. Once the inherent oscillation of photons and the mechanism of continuous interaction between photons and thick slit walls are incorporated, there is no basis for the equivalence of the two sets of models. Asserting model equivalence while ignoring photon oscillation and slit-wall coupling effects is nothing but self-deception. Its experimental conclusions are highly misleading. They cannot be extended to interpret real thick-wall double-slit interference and cannot serve as reliable experimental evidence for the validity of the principle of complementarity. Previous theoretical analyses built on physical slit models remain fully valid. Divergences originate from the replacement of experimental physical models rather than defects in the original physical mechanism analysis. The complete research object of this thought experiment refers to a physical baffle with tangible thickness capable of momentum recoil. For nearly a century, limited by measurement precision, this thought experiment remained within theoretical discussion. In 2025, Pan Jianwei’s research team published experimental results. Ultra-cold rubidium atoms captured by optical tweezers act as “quantum slits”. Photon scattering generates two light propagation paths, which are claimed to replicate Einstein’s original thought experiment and verify complementarity. After publication, this achievement was widely interpreted as the experimental conclusion settling century-long debates. This paper raises core doubts: the original thought experiment and traditional double-slit interference are built upon physical thick-wall slit channels. In contrast, the rubidium atom scattering setup contains no slits, no channels and no wall thickness. The two cases merely have approximate optical path images, while their microscopic interaction modes have fundamental divisions. The mainstream academic circle directly asserts that the two physical scenarios are equivalent. Such deduction relies on an implicit hypothesis: photons travel along ideal straight lines without lateral oscillation perpendicular to the propagation direction. According to the Original Light Theory, photons naturally possess directional oscillation perpendicular to their propagation axis. Precisely this oscillation enables photons to continuously exchange momentum with slit walls while traveling inside slit channels. Once photon oscillation effects are taken into account, the claim that single atoms can replace physical slits collapses. If arbitrary replacement of experimental carriers and elimination of key physical variables are permitted, and observations from simplified models are used to deduce physical laws applicable to original scenarios, the fundamental criteria for physical experimental demonstration will be undermined. This paper clarifies individual and statistical characteristics of photon oscillation, compares boundary conditions of the two experiments, and demonstrates major logical loopholes in this equivalence scheme. |
