Abstract In December 2025, Pan Jianwei’s research team reproduced the Einstein-Bohr recoiling-slit thought experiment proposed in 1927 at the quantum limit. They observed that the interference fringe contrast changes continuously with the momentum of the slit. Mainstream physical theories currently regard this phenomenon as critical evidence for the quantum complementarity principle. Based on the Light Primitive Theory, this paper points out that all relevant theoretical models established since the century-long debate at the Solvay Conference contain two fundamental idealized simplifications: first, physical slits are abstracted as two-dimensional geometric holes with zero thickness; second, the inherent continuous spatial oscillation of photons is ignored. Photons are not point-like particles moving along fixed straight lines. Their persistent oscillation enables continuous momentum coupling between photons and the photon self-locked matter forming the slit walls throughout the whole passage through the physically thick slit channel. The inverse correlation between path detectability and interference fringe visibility observed in the experiment can be self-consistently explained by continuous photon-slit wall interaction, without abstract hypotheses such as wave-particle complementarity or quantum superposition. This paper supplements the objective physical conditions missing from traditional models and provides a brand-new interpretative framework for quantum interference phenomena at the underlying mechanism level. Keywords: recoiling slit; Light Primitive Theory; photon oscillation; slit thickness; quantum interference; wave-particle duality 1 Introduction At the 5th Solvay Conference on Physics in 1927, Albert Einstein put forward the recoiling-slit thought experiment to challenge Niels Bohr’s complementarity principle. Einstein hypothesized that the recoil generated when a photon hits a movable slit could be measured to obtain path information reflecting the particle nature of photons, while interference fringes reflecting wave nature could be retained simultaneously. Bohr later refuted this assumption based on the uncertainty principle. Their debate lasted for nearly a century, until Pan Jianwei’s team trapped single atoms as quantum slits via optical tweezers and fully replicated this classic thought experiment at the quantum scale for the first time. Core experimental observation: continuous adjustment of the movable momentum of the slit leads to a smooth inverse correlation between interference fringe contrast and detectable photon path information. The conclusion of the experimental paper supports Bohr’s complementarity principle. Meanwhile, a large number of misinterpretations spread across self-media online falsely claim that the experiment proves the simultaneous complete acquisition of both wave and particle properties of photons, resulting in obvious distortion of scientific popularization. It should be clarified that the entire analytical system from Einstein and Bohr to the theoretical modeling of contemporary experiments is built on unrealistic idealized assumptions, which artificially eliminate two objectively existing physical facts: 1.All physical slit baffles have tangible thickness, and the spatial scale of slit walls is far larger than the equivalent interaction scale of photons. Photons passing through slits undergo continuous interaction inside a channel rather than instantly crossing a two-dimensional planar boundary; |
