Recruiting Ph.D. students and postdocs in neuroengineering at UT Austin | lab of Dr. Theodore Ho | Neural Circuits, Aging, and Alzheimer’s Disease
The Ho Lab at The University of Texas at Austin welcomes applications for Ph.D. students and postdocs interested in discovering how brain aging and Alzheimer’s disease disrupt neural circuits and computations to cause loss of learning and memory abilities, and in developing precise optogenetic and neurostimulation interventions to restore cognitive function.

Dr. Theodore Ho completed postdoctoral training with Dr. Karl Deisseroth at Stanford University, following a Ph.D. in Biophysics with Emmanuelle Passegué at UCSF and bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Harvard. He is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering, an NIH K99/R00 award recipient, a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree, and a former Jane Coffin Childs Fellow. He has published highly cited work in top journals including Nature, Science, Cell Stem Cell, and Nature Cell Biology. He is deeply committed to mentorship and supporting his trainees and students in all aspects of their education and professional development.
Research in the Ho Lab combines cutting-edge systems neuroscience, neuroengineering, machine-learning, and aging biology, to understand and reverse cognitive decline in aging and Alzheimer’s disease. Projects span neural circuit and computation dysfunction and repair, whole-brain connectivity tracing, advanced computational modeling, and human noninvasive neurostimulation approaches. Cutting-edge methods include:
-Longitudinal two-photon calcium imaging of neuronal populations during learning and behavior
-Optogenetics and single-neuron resolution multiplexed holographic optogenetic stimulation for precise control of neural activity
-High-density electrophysiology, whole-brain tissue clearing and connectivity tracing, and light-sheet imaging
-Machine learning and closed-loop approaches for modeling neural activity and developing targeted interventions
-Translational human neurostimulation approaches
We welcome applicants from engineering, neuroscience, computer science, math, physics, biology, and related fields. Competitive salary and benefits, and visa support are guaranteed.
Applicants should email theodore.ho@austin.utexas.edu. Graduate student applicants should apply through UT Austin’s Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Ph.D. Program with an application deadline of November 15, 2026.
