Abstract Albert Einstein’s mass-energy equation \(E=mc^2\) proved the mutual convertibility between mass and energy, laying the theoretical foundation for nuclear fission, nuclear fusion and nuclear explosion technologies. The mass loss observed in conventional nuclear reactions essentially results from the escape of partial high-energy gamma photons confined inside protons, neutrons and electrons. To date, the detailed microscopic mechanism of this partial energy release has not been fully clarified. Moreover, traditional energy release is disorderly and requires extreme operating conditions, with only a small fraction of the energy stored in elementary particles being utilized. Existing catalysis and resonance technologies mainly operate at the atomic nucleus level, which can be adopted as a near-term improvement approach. By applying catalysis and resonance, partial energy release can be made regular and controllable while reaction conditions are simplified, creating a new generation of nuclear energy technology superior to conventional fission and fusion. On this basis, this paper further puts forward an ultimate research direction: to explore catalysis and resonance methods that directly act on individual protons, neutrons and electrons. The goal is to realize the targeted and on-demand release of all high-energy gamma photons from every elementary particle and achieve full mass-energy conversion at the theoretical limit. Based on the confined photon model, this paper designs three parallel technical routes including special particle catalysis, resonant electromagnetic field catalysis and gravitational perturbation catalysis, following the principles of chemical catalysis and Edison’s exploratory research paradigm. Conventional nuclear technologies only enable disorderly partial energy release; atomic nucleus-level catalysis and resonance serve as upgraded solutions; while particle-level technologies targeting protons, neutrons and electrons represent the ultimate approach to fully harness energy from matter. This multi-tiered technical system can not only improve existing energy systems and mitigate nuclear pollution in stages, but also point out the ultimate form of energy utilization for humanity. This paper systematically elaborates the theoretical basis, technical schemes, existing difficulties and phased research plans. Keywords: particle-level catalysis; full mass-energy conversion; confined photon model; resonant catalysis; elementary particle; atomic nucleus; high-energy gamma photon; mass loss; nuclear waste recycling; targeted energy release 1 Introduction 1.1 Current Situation and Limitations of Conventional Nuclear Reactions Since the proposal of the mass-energy equation, nuclear fission, nuclear fusion and nuclear explosion have been widely applied. Macroscopically, nuclear reactions are accompanied by significant mass loss and massive energy output. Microscopically, the partial escape of high-energy gamma photons confined within protons, neutrons and electrons is the root cause of mass loss. Although this partial energy release phenomenon has been observed, its complete microscopic mechanism remains unclear. In addition, conventional energy release modes have prominent drawbacks. The energy release process is disorderly and uncontrollable, prone to sudden violent energy bursts. Nuclear fission relies on scarce raw materials such as uranium, and controllable fusion requires ultra-high temperatures and strong magnetic fields, resulting in harsh operating conditions. More importantly, only a small portion of the energy inside elementary particles is released, while most high-energy gamma photons remain trapped, leading to a low mass-energy conversion efficiency. Radioactive nuclear waste is another major problem derived from conventional nuclear technologies. Elementary particles inside nuclear waste continuously emit high-energy gamma photons in a disorderly manner, generating nuclear radiation that lasts for tens of thousands of years. Conventional sealed storage cannot fundamentally eliminate nuclear pollution. In short, existing nuclear devices including atomic bombs and nuclear reactors can only passively trigger random partial energy release from protons, neutrons and electrons. They can neither regulate the energy release rate nor extract all energy stored in elementary particles. 1.2 Two-Tier Research Objectives and Core Cognition Based on the confined photon model, this paper establishes the fundamental logic: protons, neutrons and electrons are bound systems formed by high-energy gamma photons trapped by force fields. Energy release is essentially the process of gamma photons breaking free from confinement. In accordance with the current status of technologies, this research is divided into a near-term improvement objective and an ultimate exploration objective. First, the near-term objective: atomic nucleus-level research. Catalysis and resonance are adopted to replace high-temperature and high-energy impact. This approach aims to regularize and control the partial energy release from protons, neutrons and electrons, and greatly simplify reaction conditions. With relatively low technical barriers, this route can be put into practical use at an early stage and outperform traditional fission and fusion technologies. Second, the ultimate objective: elementary particle-level research. We seek sophisticated physical methods and new catalytic media that can directly act on individual protons, neutrons and electrons. The core goal is to realize targeted and on-demand release of all internal high-energy gamma photons according to practical needs, and break the confinement barriers of elementary particles completely to achieve full mass-energy conversion. Catalysis and resonance are natural laws that can generate remarkable effects with low energy input, instead of relying on high-energy collisions. Following Edison’s research philosophy of batch screening and iterative optimization, we will carry out experiments and verification step by step. Once the ultimate technology is developed, all substances on Earth can be converted into usable energy, and nuclear radiation and pollution problems will be completely resolved. 1.3 Research Purposes and Significance This research covers both realistic improvement and long-term ultimate exploration. In the short run, atomic nucleus-level catalysis and resonance technologies can standardize partial energy release, simplify operating conditions, and improve the efficiency and safety of existing nuclear energy systems. In the long run, exploring technologies for individual protons, neutrons and electrons enables on-demand full energy release from elementary particles. Theoretically, this paper distinguishes disorderly partial release, controllable partial release and targeted full release of energy, and improves the application system of the confined photon model. Practically, improved nuclear energy technologies can alleviate the global energy crisis and nuclear pollution in the near future. If the ultimate technologies for elementary particles are realized, human beings will break free from the constraints of terrestrial resources, and obtain endless energy for deep space exploration and interstellar travel, which is of milestone significance for the development of science and human civilization. |
