PhD opportunity at Politecnico di Torino:
Study of the nanoscale heat transfer properties of 2D and nanostructured materials by means of Scanning Thermal Microscopy

Research Project summary
The continuing miniaturization of electronic circuits and their widespread use in artificial intelligence and high-performance computing are leading to a substantial increase in heat dissipation. Consequently, thermal management and heat transfer at the nanoscale have become major research challenges.

This PhD project will focus on the experimental investigation of nanoscale heat transfer using Scanning Thermal Microscopy (SThM). SThM is a Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) technique that provides unmatched high lateral resolution for studying the thermal properties of nanomaterials, although obtaining quantitative measurements remains challenging [1,2].

One-dimensional and two-dimensional materials, heterostructures, nanostructured materials, and thermoelectric materials will be investigated as case studies. The research will address thermal conductivity, diffusive and ballistic heat transport, thermal interface resistance, probe–sample contact radius, and other heat-transfer properties and phenomena. Experimental results will be interpreted with the aid of finite-element simulations of the interaction between the SThM probe and the sample.

The successful candidate will learn to perform Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and SThM measurements. When appropriate, the analysis will be complemented by related SPM techniques, including AFM force–distance measurements, nanoindentation, Piezoresponse Force Microscopy, and Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy.

The candidate will also develop a solid understanding of nanoscale heat-transfer physics and learn to perform advanced data processing and analysis using computational methods and finite-element software. In addition, he/she will learn to operate and control the electronics of the experimental setup and contribute to improving and upgrading the experimental methods and instrumentation. Possible developments include SThM measurements in AC mode and, potentially, the implementation of the 3ω technique.
The overall aim of the project is to advance our understanding of heat transfer at the nanoscale and to identify promising approaches and candidate materials for next-generation electronic devices.

Candidate background
The ideal candidate should have completed the exams and duties related to a MSc in Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical/Electronic Engineering or related fields, by the end of October 2026. Furthermore, he/she should have a strong aptitude for experimental work as well as an interest in the theoretical comprehension of the investigated phenomena. No GRE test is required but a good knowledge of the English language is necessary.

About Politecnico di Torino and the Department of Applied Science and Technology
The Politecnico di Torino (https://www.polito.it/ https://www.disat.polito.it/ https://www.disat.polito.it/research/research_groups/cmpcs), is one of the most important universities in Europe for engineering and architecture studies, strongly committed to collaboration with industry. Currently it is among the top Engineering and Technology universities in the world, the 53rd according to the QS University Rankings 2026 by broad Subject. It has about 39,000 students enrolled in academic courses of different levels, Bachelor, Master of Science, PhD, Specializing Master Courses of I and II Levels (20% of them are international students). POLITO employs more than 1000 people among professors and tenured researchers.
The Department of Applied Science and Technology (DISAT) focuses on research and education involving the fundamental principles of matter and energy, their transformation and related engineering applications. The DISAT endorses, coordinates, and manages fundamental and applied research, education and technology transfer. It does so throughout a wide and complementary range of disciplines: physics of condensed matter and fundamental interactions, nanotechnology, chemistry, materials science, and metallurgy. DISAT is one of the major Departments of the Politecnico. The staff counts on more than 150 faculties, 200 research assistants and collaborators, as well as on the support of about 60 people in the technical and administrative staff.
