[交流] Ph.D. Student and Postdoc Openings in Exposure Science and Analytical Chemistry

The NexGenPPT (https://nexgenppt.iastate.edu/) at Iowa State University invites applications for Ph.D. student and postdoctoral researcher positions in exposure science and analytical chemistry. We are seeking researchers interested in chemical exposure assessment, passive sampling, polymer and textile materials, and data-driven modeling.

Research Areas

Our research examines how hazardous chemicals are generated, transported, deposited, and retained on personal protective equipment, wearable samplers, and polymer or textile materials. Current projects address firefighter smoke exposure, battery-related fire emissions, passive sampling, PPE contamination, and personal exposure assessment.

Potential research topics include:

Development and evaluation of wearable and passive sampling materials
Measurement of PAHs, volatile and semivolatile organic compounds, metals, and other fire-related contaminants
Sample preparation and chemical analysis using techniques such as GC–MS and ICP–MS
Adsorption, absorption, diffusion, and desorption of chemicals in polymers, fibers, fabrics, and nanofiber materials
Chemical contamination and decontamination of personal protective equipment
Mechanistic, statistical, and machine-learning models for exposure estimation and material performance
Integration of chemical, environmental, sensor, and personal exposure data

Qualifications for Ph.D. Applicants

Required qualifications:

A bachelor's or master's degree in chemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental or occupational health, chemical engineering, materials science, polymer science, textile engineering, environmental engineering, or a related field
Previous laboratory or research experience
Basic quantitative and data-analysis skills
Strong interest in interdisciplinary research
Ability to communicate clearly in written and spoken English
Ability to meet the admission requirements of the relevant Iowa State University graduate program

Preferred qualifications:

Experience with chemical sample preparation or instrumental analysis
Knowledge of exposure assessment, passive sampling, or occupational health
Experience with polymers, textiles, fibers, membranes, coatings, or nanomaterials
Experience with Python, R, MATLAB, statistical modeling, or machine learning
Research experience involving smoke, aerosols, environmental contaminants, or personal protective equipment

Qualifications for Postdoctoral Applicants

Required qualifications:

A Ph.D. in analytical chemistry, exposure science, environmental or occupational health, chemical engineering, materials science, polymer science, textile engineering, or a closely related field by the position start date
Strong experience in exposure science, analytical chemistry, or chemical–material interactions
Ability to independently design experiments, analyze data, and interpret results
Experience with research quality assurance and quality control
A record of peer-reviewed publications
Strong scientific writing and communication skills
Ability to work with researchers and students from different disciplines

Preferred qualifications:

Experience with GC–MS, LC–MS, ICP–MS, or related analytical methods
Experience with passive sampling, personal exposure monitoring, or environmental sampling
Knowledge of sorption, diffusion, mass transfer, or contaminant transport in polymers and textiles
Experience with fibers, fabrics, protective clothing, membranes, coatings, or nanofibers
Experience with Python, R, MATLAB, mechanistic modeling, statistical modeling, or machine learning
Experience managing research projects, mentoring students, or contributing to research proposals

Applicants are not expected to have expertise in every area. Strong candidates will have a solid background in exposure science or analytical chemistry and experience or interest in at least one complementary area: polymer/textile materials or computational modeling and AI.

Funding and Appointment

Ph.D. students will receive stipend, tuition support, and health insurance.

The postdoctoral appointment will be for one year, with possible renewal based on performance and funding. Salary and benefits will follow Iowa State University policies.

Visa eligibility and sponsorship will follow university policies.

Application

Please email the following materials to mezhang@iastate.edu:

A curriculum vitae
A cover letter describing your research experience, interests, and fit with the position
Contact information for three references
Academic transcripts for Ph.D. applicants
Up to three representative publications for postdoctoral applicants
Examples of relevant code or research products, if applicable

Applications will be reviewed beginning on September 01, 2026 and will continue until the positions are filled.
