Dr Wanxin Li is an Assistant Professor at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. She received her PhD in Environmental Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and studies emerging-contaminant transformation, low-carbon water treatment, disinfection byproducts, toxicity, and kinetic modelling.

Professor Zheng Chen, XJTLU co-supervisor, is a Professor at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. He received his PhD in Agricultural Chemistry from Hokkaido University and focuses on redox biogeochemistry at soil-water interfaces, environmental analytical tools, microbial fuel cells, and remediation of contaminated wetlands.

Professor Jie Han is a Professor at Xi’an Jiaotong University. His research covers emerging contaminants, polymer adsorption, water treatment, advanced oxidation, and data science; he is Editor-in-Chief of Environmental Chemistry Letters.

Dr Haifei Zhang is a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Liverpool, specializing in porous and polymeric materials, separation science, adsorbents, and water treatment.

李婉鑫博士,西交利物浦大学助理教授,香港科技大学环境工程博士,主要研究新污染物转化、低碳水处理、消毒副产物与毒性评价,以及动力学建模。

陈正教授(西交利物浦大学共同导师),西交利物浦大学教授,日本北海道大学农业化学博士,主要研究土壤-水界面及湿地根际氧化还原活性元素的生物地球化学过程、环境元素分析工具、微生物燃料电池与污染湿地修复。

韩杰教授,西安交通大学教授,主要研究新污染物与环境健康风险、聚合物吸附、水处理、高级氧化及AI/数据科学,现任 Environmental Chemistry Letters 主编。

Haifei Zhang 博士,利物浦大学化学系高级讲师,主要研究多孔与聚合物材料、分离科学、吸附材料和水处理。

项目简介


Microplastics (MPs) and emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) frequently co-exist in aquatic environments, yet most studies treat MPs as passive carriers whose aging simply changes their affinity for pollutants. This project asks a more dynamic question: can co-existing EOCs actively regulate the photo-aging trajectory of MPs and thereby reshape their subsequent pollutant-vectoring behaviour? Using polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate as structurally distinct model polymers, and representative EOCs such as tetrabromobisphenol A  and bisphenol A as contrasting photochemical regulators, the project will establish controlled single- and composite-pollution systems under simulated solar irradiation. Surface morphology, oxidation and crystallinity will be tracked using SEM, ATR-FTIR and XRD, while fluorescence spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry will characterize released dissolved organic matter and transformation products. Electron paramagnetic resonance and selective scavenging experiments will resolve reactive oxygen species at the MP-water interface and distinguish photosensitization from radical-quenching pathways. Finally, adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamic analysis will determine how contaminant-regulated aging changes the capacity and mechanisms of MPs to carry secondary pollutants. By linking photochemical regulation, polymer aging and secondary vectoring in one mechanistic framework, the project aims to improve long-term environmental risk assessment of complex microplastic pollution. The student will benefit from complementary expertise and research resources across XJTLU, XJTU and the University of Liverpool.

微塑料与新兴有机污染物(EOCs)在水环境中广泛共存,但现有研究多将微塑料视为被动载体,重点关注“微塑料老化后如何改变污染物吸附”。本项目进一步关注一个更具动态性的科学问题:共存EOCs是否会主动调控微塑料的光老化轨迹,并由此重塑其后续污染物载体行为?研究将选取结构差异显著的聚乙烯和聚对苯二甲酸乙二醇酯作为模型微塑料,以四溴双酚A和双酚A等代表性EOCs构建不同光化学调控情景,在模拟太阳光条件下开展单一与复合体系对比。通过SEM、ATR-FTIR和XRD跟踪表面形貌、氧化程度与结晶度演变,并结合荧光光谱和高分辨质谱表征微塑料释放的溶解性有机物及污染物转化产物。进一步利用电子顺磁共振和选择性淬灭实验解析微塑料-水界面的活性氧过程,区分光敏化与自由基淬灭等机制。最后,通过吸附动力学、等温模型和热力学分析,定量揭示EOC调控老化如何改变微塑料对后续污染物的承载能力及作用机制。项目将把光化学调控、聚合物老化与二次载体效应纳入统一机制框架,为复杂微塑料复合污染的长期环境风险评价提供新认识。学生将共享西浦、西安交大与利物浦大学三校互补的科研平台与导师资源。

Applicants with backgrounds in environmental science/engineering, chemistry, materials science, or related fields are preferred. Experience with microplastics, photochemistry, polymer characterization, adsorption modelling, EPR, chromatography/mass spectrometry, or high-resolution MS is advantageous. Strong experimental, quantitative, and English academic writing skills are desirable.

优先考虑环境科学与工程、化学、材料科学或相关专业背景。具备微塑料、光化学、聚合物表征、吸附模型、EPR、色谱/质谱或高分辨质谱经验者优先;具备较好的实验、定量分析和英文科研写作基础者将更具优势。
