PhD Opportunities ¡ª Moghadam Lab, UCL Chemical Engineering University College London: Ranked 9th in the World (QS 2026) Two fully-fledged PhD projects are available in the laboratory of Prof Peyman Moghadam in the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCL. Both projects sit at the frontier of metal-organic framework (MOF) research: the field that won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Project 1: AI-Driven Computational Discovery of MOFs Develop machine learning and high-throughput screening pipelines to discover the next generation of MOFs for carbon capture, hydrogen storage, and water harvesting. You'll work at the interface of computational chemistry, AI, and materials design, navigating a chemical space of millions of possible structures to find the few that matter. Project 2: Experimental Gas Adsorption in MOFs A hands-on, lab-based PhD focused on synthesising MOFs and characterising their gas adsorption behaviour using state-of-the-art instrumentation at UCL. You'll generate the experimental data that underpins the field's most exciting applications from clean energy to direct air capture of CO2. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in computer science, physics, chemistry, or chemical/materials engineering, and a passion for tackling some of the biggest challenges in energy and sustainability.
