PhD Position in the Statistical Physics of Living Matter at CUHK

(Fall 2026)

Yilin Wu Lab at Department of Physics of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) studies the motion, order, and intelligence of living matter.  We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate who wants to understand the phase transitions and emergent behavior of active solids and active flow networks.  The project seeks to establish new principles for active matter engineering and for autonomous fluidics in micro-robotic systems.  More information of our recent research can be found in the lab website:

https://www.phy.cuhk.edu.hk/ylwu/index.html

Wu Lab fosters an interdisciplinary research environment. Our quest is mainly driven by experiments but often requires modeling or computer simulations. Candidates with either experimental or theoretical experience in any of the following areas (but not limited to these areas) are welcomed to apply: condensed matter physics, soft matter physics, biophysics, fluid mechanics, physical chemistry, and engineering.

Requirement: GPA ≥3.5, TOEFL (iBT: ≥79 or Level 4.5) or IELTS (Band ≥6.5); the GPA requirement can be lower if the candidate has a GRE Physics score >860.  Successful applicant will commence the PhD study in Fall semester 2026. The position is fully funded and provides a scholarship of HKD19,100-19,660 per month, 12 months per year (annual stipend ~ USD 29300).  Applicants should send their CV and transcript to Dr. Yilin Wu at <ylwu@cuhk.edu.hk>.

About the advisor:

Yilin Wu obtained his B.S. in Physics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2004 and Ph.D. in Physics from University of Notre Dame in 2009. After postdoctoral research at Rowland Institute of Harvard University (with Howard C. Berg), he joined the Department of Physics of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and currently holds the position of full Professor. His research has substantially advanced the understanding on the collective motion and self-organization of primitive life forms and active matter. He was named as an RGC Research Fellow of Hong Kong SAR, received the Xplorer Prize, and was awarded the National Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.
