The Du Laboratory at the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, University of Tennessee School of Medicine (UTHSC), is seeking highly motivated postdoctoral fellows to join an exciting and multidisciplinary neuroscience research program focused on the cellular and circuit mechanisms of brain disorders and behavior. The positions will start immediately, and the recruitment will open until filled. Expected candidates will hold a PhD or MD in Neuroscience or related fields (e.g., Physiology, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, or Cell Biology) with a track record of productivity. Skills in optogenetics, in vivo Ca2+ imaging, electrophysiology, molecular/cellular approaches, animal surgery, and behavior are preferred, but not required. The Du lab integrates systems neuroscience, electrophysiology, mouse behavior, viral circuit tools, in vivo Ca2+ imaging, molecular neurobiology, glial biology, and cancer neuroscience to uncover how defined neural circuits regulate behavior and disease progression. Recently, by using a combination of patch-clamp and time-lapse confocal imaging, the Du lab identified that protons function as neurotransmitters to regulate synaptic transmission and plasticity in the amygdala and that the postsynaptic proton receptor, acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs), play a key role in this process (PNAS 2014). Moreover, the ongoing project suggests that ASICs manipulate fear memory erasure (eLife 2017; JCI Insight 2022), as well as social hierarchy behaviors (Science Advances 2024; eLife 2025). The lab also builds on a strong foundation in neuron-glioma synaptic physiology, Alzheimer's disease-related mechanisms, supported by multiple prior high-impact publications (e.g., Theranostics 2025; bioRxiv 2023). What We Offer • A highly collaborative and supportive training environment • Access to strong neuroscience and translational research communities at UTHSC • Opportunities for high-impact publications and independent career development • Mentorship tailored toward academic faculty and industry career goals • Competitive salary and benefits consistent with NIH guidelines To apply, send a cover letter summarizing your qualifications, research interests/ accomplishments, and skills, plus a CV and contact information of 3 references to Dr. Jianyang Du (jdu15@uthsc.edu).
