Title: Unlocking value from seaweed processing waste
Project ID:
Description: Seaweed is used to make plant and soil products, but much of the seaweed becomes waste after processing. This project will investigate if that waste can be developed and commercialised into useful materials such as wound dressings, filters, or sustainable packaging. By finding innovative ways to reuse these leftovers, the project will help reduce waste, create new products, and support the growing seaweed industry in Australia and New Zealand.

Skills
Requirement: A background in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, or similar discipline is required. Experience in cellulose and seaweed biobased functional nanomaterials is desirable.
Department: School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences
Type: PhD
Scholarship: The successful student will receive a STIPEND of AUD$38.5k per annum for 3.5 years. A fee waiver will be offered to suitable candidates, subject to conditions. In addition, excellent candidate may receive a AUD$10,000 per annum scholarship top-up.
Applicants will need to satisfy the admission criteria for AUT’s PhD program and hold an appropriate visa at the time of application.
