Postdoctoral Positions in Advanced Battery Research and Nanomechanics at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Start Date: As soon as possible
Positions: Postdoctoral Fellows ($62,000 - $75,000 CAD per year, depending on experience).

The NanoEngineering for Advanced Integrated Materials (nanoAIM) Laboratory, led by Dr. Mahdi Hamidi in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta, invites applications from highly qualified Postdoctoral Fellows interested in innovative, interdisciplinary research. We are recruiting for two themes:

Theme 1: Advanced Electrochemical Energy Storage
•        Research Focus: Development and characterization of lithium-ion, zinc-ion, and/or sodium-ion battery systems across solid-state and liquid/gel electrolytes. Emphasis on electrode/electrolyte design, interfacial phenomena, selective/electrodeposition workflows, and rigorous electrochemical testing (EIS, CV, galvanostatic cycling/GCD). Experience with micro-/chip-integrated batteries is welcome but not required; microbattery integration is a possible downstream application.
•        Desired Background: Strong expertise in electrochemistry, materials chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science, with hands-on experience in cell assembly (coin/pouch/Swagelok), electrolyte formulation (aqueous/organic/gel/polymer), and electrochemical characterization (EIS, CV, GCD). Familiarity with photolithography, thin film/coating methods (e.g., PVD/ALD/electrodeposition) and data analysis/QA is an asset.

Theme 2: Nanomechanics & Electro-chemo-mechanical Coupling in Energy Storage
•        Research Focus: Investigation of mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms in battery-relevant materials at the nano/microscale, including electro-chemo-mechanical coupling, electrode mechanics, and interfacial stability. Work may involve AFM-based nanomechanics, in-situ SEM/TEM, Raman/optical methods, and basic modeling/parametric studies to link geometry, coatings, and performance.
•        Desired Background: Background in mechanical engineering, materials science, or physics with practical experience in nanoscale mechanical characterization (AFM nanomechanics, in-situ SEM/TEM, micro/nano-indentation). Exposure to battery systems or electrochemical processes is beneficial but not mandatory.

Facilities and Instrumentation:
•        Cypher AFM integrated within an inert-atmosphere glovebox for controlled studies
•        In-situ SEM equipped for nanoscale mechanical testing
•        Comprehensive battery fabrication and electrochemical testing equipment
•        Facilities for photolithography-patterned, vertically aligned CNT growth
•        Full access to state-of-the-art nanoFAB facilities at the University of Alberta
