Professor Georgina Hold is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate with a background in bioinformatics or computational biology to join her research group at the Microbiome Research Centre, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney). The group focuses on translational microbiome science, particularly the host–microbe interface in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other chronic gastrointestinal conditions. This PhD project is embedded in a large-scale longitudinal cohort study of patients with IBD. It will integrate metagenomic, metabolomic, and clinical metadata to identify microbial and host-derived signatures associated with disease activity, treatment response, and progression. Key research objectives include: • Analysing temporal changes in gut microbiome composition and function using shotgun metagenomics. • Integrating multi-omics data (e.g., microbiota, metabolome, transcriptome) across timepoints. • Identifying predictive microbial or molecular markers of clinical outcomes using machine learning and statistical modelling. • Contributing to the development of bioinformatic pipelines and machine learning/AI approaches for microbiome-based stratification of IBD. We are seeking candidates with: • A strong academic background (Honours Class I or MSc) in bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, data science, or a related discipline. • Proficiency in R and/or Python, and experience with high-dimensional data analysis (e.g., microbiome, transcriptomics, metabolomics). • Prior experience in longitudinal data modelling, mixed-effects models, or machine learning will be highly regarded. • Familiarity with microbiome analysis tools (e.g., QIIME2, HUMAnN3, MetaPhlAn, DESeq2) is desirable. Scholarship and Support. Competitive applicants will be supported in applying for a UNSW RTP scholarship or other schemes that provide full tuition and stipend. The candidate will be embedded in an interdisciplinary and collaborative team of clinicians, microbiologists, and computational scientists. To express interest, please email georgina.hold@unsw.edu.au with the following: • A brief cover letter outlining your motivation and fit for the project. • CV including academic transcript. • A short research statement (200 words max) describing your interest or prior experience in IBD bioinformatics. • Any relevant publications or code repositories (if available). |
