Lithium Extraction from Geothermal Water
Lithium is a critical element in modern batteries and plays a key role in advancing a renewable, low-carbon economy. Currently, lithium is primarily extracted from salt lakes and high-concentration ores using energy-intensive chemical processes. However, New Zealand's geothermal fluids contain significant lithium reserves, presenting an opportunity for a more sustainable extraction approach. The challenge lies in the low lithium concentrations and harsh geothermal conditions.
An emerging method that employs a membrane process, shows promise to address these challenges. This project leverages the expertise of researchers from the University of Canterbury (UC), the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST in Saudi Arabia), and GNS Science (GNS) to develop a clean and cost-effective membrane method suitable for lithium extraction from New Zealand geothermal conditions.
This project focuses on (i) developing chemically stable, highly lithium-selective membranes and (ii) designing a system that synergistically integrates the processes of electrochemical membrane ion separation and geothermal-assisted membrane distillation.

PhD Opportunities
A PhD position is available in the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Canterbury [1, 2]. Successful candidates will work under the supervision of Dr. Ben Yin (UC), Dr Lucjan Sajkowski (GNS), and Prof. Zhiping Lai (KAUST), collaborating with partner investigators from the universities in New Zealand and internationally.
This research offers the opportunity to develop multidisciplinary expertise in material engineering, membrane technology, chemical and process design, and geochemistry. The PhD student will gain familiarity with a wide range of material research techniques. They will also become experts in membrane development and system design. The student will be expected to spend time at GNS and KAUST over the course of their PhD studies.

Eligibility
Applicants should hold a master's degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, or materials engineering with strong academic performance (GPA > 3.6/4). Alternatively, candidates with a four-year (Honours) degree with first-class Honours are eligible.
We seek highly motivated individuals with a strong academic record, practical laboratory skills, and the ability to work well in a team. A background in membrane research is preferred.
Candidates must meet the University of Canterbury's PhD admission requirements, including English language proficiency [3].

How to Apply
Interested applicants should email Dr. Ben Yin (Ben.Yin@canterbury.ac.nz, CC: ben.yin@vuw.ac.nz) with "PhD in Lithium Extraction" as the subject line. Please include:
•        A full curriculum vitae, including academic transcripts
•        A statement of interest outlining why you wish to join this project
•        The names and contact details of at least two referees
•        Evidence of English language proficiency
•        Your expected start date

Funding & Scholarships
Scholarship is available for outstanding candidates. Applicants may also be required to apply for a UC Doctoral Scholarship [4]. Pacific students and Māori students may be eligible for the UC Pacific Doctoral Scholarship [5] and UC Matariki Doctoral Scholarship [6]. Chinese students are encouraged to apply for UC-CSC scholarships [7].
The university scholarship provides a stipend of NZD 32,000 per annum for three years. The CSC scholarship offers a stipend of NZD 2,100 per month for four years, along with return flight tickets and health insurance, Both cover payment of all university tuition fees.
