PhD opportunity ¨C Memorial University Department: Process Engineering Supervisor: Dr. Yan Zhang (Webpage) Research Topic: Adsorption of metal ions from wastewater with 2D nanocarbon-reinforced biopolymer composites Anticipated Starting Date: Fall 2025 or Winter 2026 Department Background The Department of Process Engineering at Memorial University emphasizes the processing and production of petrochemicals, oil, gas, minerals, food, and any other materials used to obtain valuable products through green and sustainable technologies. Research in the department covers the topics of chemical and biochemical conversion of natural resources into useful intermediate industrial chemicals and ultimately end products; green recovery of valuable metals from lowgrade ores; contaminant removal from solid fuels, crude oil and natural gas; modeling, simulation and optimal control of complex reactions, separation and integrated reaction-separation processes. Research Project The PhD study will be focused on experimental investigation of adsorptive removal/recovery of metal ions using 2D nanocarbon-reinforced biopolymer composites. This research project is supported by an Alliance Mission Grant from the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The chosen candidate will be awarded a yearly scholarship amounting to $25,000 for a duration of 4 years to support their PhD research. The objective of this project is to design and fabricate economically viable adsorbents that can efficiently remove or recover metal ions from industrial effluents. The ultimate objective of the research is to design and implement a pilot-scale fixed-bed adsorption technology that can effectively remove/recover metal ions from industrial effluents.
