Hiring Ad for a PhD Student

Location: McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Position Summary
I invite applications for a PhD position to join McMaster University’s DeGroote School of
Business (DSB) in Fall 2025. The successful candidate will conduct research in stochastic
optimization and dynamic decision-making, with applications in supply chain management and
smart cities. The position offers a competitive funding package ranging from $36,000 to $40,000
per year.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of empirical and stochastic models to
transform data into better decisions for various processes and operations, particularly related to
Supply Chain Management and Smart Cities. Our aim is to creatively combine tools from machine
learning, optimization, stochastic processes (e.g., Markov decision processes), and approximate
dynamic programming to develop meaningful dynamic control policies for problems that arise in
(large-scale) stochastic systems.

If you share enthusiasm for academic challenges and meet the requirements below, I encourage

Qualifications:
• An MSc degree in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Computer Science, or
closely related fields.
• Strong background in probability theory, operations research, and (stochastic) optimization.
• Proven track record of research excellence and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
• Proficiency in English
