This PhD project aims to develop low-carbon, high-performance cementitious materials to combat marine corrosion and reduce global CO₂ emissions. Using advanced material characterisation techniques, this project explores microstructure evolution and long-term durability for sustainable ocean infrastructure. Join a global effort to create resilient, eco-friendly concrete technologies. Lead the Way in Sustainable and Resilient Concrete Are you passionate about tackling climate change through cutting-edge concrete technology? This PhD project offers an opportunity to pioneer low-carbon concrete solutions for marine environments, addressing the urgent need for durable, sustainable infrastructure. What will you do • Innovative Materials Development Design and optimize novel cementitious materials with reduced carbon footprints and superior corrosion resistance, addressing concrete’s significant contribution to global carbon emissions. • Microstructural Analysis Investigate the hydration mechanisms and microstructure evolution of these materials using advanced multiscale characterization techniques. • Performance Evaluation Assess the durability of the developed materials through rigorous laboratory testing and real-world marine environment trials, enabling data-driven material optimization. What’s in it for you? • Access world-class facilities at Southampton’s Boldrewood Innovation Campus and collaborate with global partners (e.g., Nanyang Technological University, Tsinghua University). • Gain expertise in advanced experimental/numerical methods and publish in high-impact journals. • Develop transferable skills through workshops, grant writing, and industry engagement. Join us and shape a sustainable future while advancing your career in academia or industry. Entry Requirements • Required Qualifications 1st or 2.1 honours degree (or international equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Mechanics, Materials Science, or a related field. • High motivation, self-direction, and a proactive approach to research. • Excellent communication and teamwork skills for effective collaboration. • IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent) for non-native English speakers. Preferred Qualifications • Experience in cementitious materials, concrete technology, numerical modeling, or experimental testing. • Proficiency in coding and computational tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python). • Strong academic writing skills for producing high-quality research papers. • Prior involvement in research projects. Closing date: 31 August 2025. Applications will be considered in the order that they are received, the position will be considered filled when a suitable candidate has been identified. Funding: We offer a range of funding opportunities for both UK and international students, including Bursaries and Scholarships. For more information please visit PhD Scholarships | Doctoral College | University of Southampton Funding will be awarded on a rolling basis, so apply early for the best opportunity to be considered. How To Apply Apply online: Search for a Postgraduate Programme of Study (soton.ac.uk) Select programme type (Research), 2025/26, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, next page select “PhD Eng & Env. (Full time)”.
