EPSRC IDLA Studentship (2025) at Queen Mary University of London, UK:

Project Topic: Probabilistic Simulation for Airport Airside Operations: Uncertainty Quantification and Optimisation

With the growing complexity of airport operations and the increasing demand for efficiency and sustainability, this PhD project aims to develop a probabilistic simulation platform for airport airside operations, focusing on uncertainty quantification (UQ) and optimisation. Airport airside operations, such as aircraft taxiing and runway scheduling, are influenced by various uncertain factors, including weather conditions and traffic flows. The project will develop a probabilistic framework to quantify these uncertainties and apply advanced optimisation algorithms to improve operational efficiency. By simulating and predicting real-time operations in a probabilistic simulation environment, this research will offer solutions to reduce delays, minimise fuel consumption, and enhance decision-making processes. The project aligns with the wider goals of decarbonisation and the efficient use of airport infrastructure, supporting a sustainable aviation future.

Key research questions
•        How can uncertainties in airside operations be effectively modelled within a probabilistic simulation framework?
•        What are the primary sources of operational uncertainty, and how can they be incorporated into decision-making processes?
•        How can optimisation algorithms be developed to account for uncertainty in real-time airside operations?
•        Can predictive models improve operational efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of airside operations?
This project will address these questions by developing new techniques for UQ and optimisation, leveraging real and synthetic operational data. The goal is to create a framework that enhances decision-making capabilities in dynamic and uncertain environments, leading to more efficient airport operations.

About the studentship:
The project will be funded by EPSRC IDLA studentship including enhanced payment by up to free-tax 2,500 GBP p.a more (on top of standard free tax salary 20,622 GBP p.a for four years) and at least 3 months of industrial placement at National Air Traffic Services.

About the applicants:
•        A top Master or undergraduate student (top 5%) in the following areas: Computer Science, Operational Research, Machine Learning, Transportation Engineering, Systems Engineering and Control Engineering.  
•        English minimum requirement: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent English tests.
•        Note that EPSRC will normally limit the proportion of international students appointed each year through individual doctoral training programmes to 30% of the total. Therefore the applicant is preferably from a top Chinese university (211 and 985) with some decent publications.

About the supervisor:
•        Dr Xinwei Wang (https://www.sems.qmul.ac.uk/staff/x.wang) is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), UK. He was a Postdoc at TU Delft, The Netherlands from 2020 to 2022, and at QMUL from 2019 to 2020, respectively. Prior to that, he obtained a PhD degree from Beihang University, China in 2019. Over the years, he has integrated artificial intelligence and systems engineering for risk assessment, motion planning and decision making in aerospace/transport intelligent systems. He has established close connections to world-leading research groups from University of Sheffield, Cranfield University, Loughborough University, TU Munich, TU Berlin, TU Delft, TU Dresden, EPFL and also top universities in China. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal Advances in Space Research, and member of Young Editorial Board of the Journal Astrodynamics. He is a recipient of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Co-Fund Fellowship (2022), and IEEE ITSS Young Professionals Travelling Fellowship (2022). He has authored over 40 papers, including those in TR Part C, IEEE T-ITS, IEEE T-SMC, IEEE T-FS, IEEE T-VT, IEEE T-AES, etc. He has been listed in Top 2% Scientists in Aerospace & Aeronautics Worldwide 2023 by Stanford University.
