John Scott, British Journal of General Practice, June 1999 It is difficult to fault this book, if not impossible. It is certain the become the standard text for junior doctors.....and hopefully for medical students. Quite simply it doesn't get any better than this. John Scott, British Journal of General Practice, June 1999 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Oxford Handbook of Clinical and Laboratory Investigations Paperback: 838 pages Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA; 2 edition (November 24, 2005) Language: English ISBN-10: 0198566638 ISBN-13: 978-0198566632 Product Dimensions: 7 x 4.1 x 1.3 inches Review This book would appeal to virtually anyone early in his/her medical career - medical students, interns, residents, and junior attendings. It would also appeal to anyone in the allied health sciences whose daily work involves the various tests discussed, or anyone in the field of healthcare who is interested in why certain tests are done for which diseases. ... I found this book to be very useful firsthand when asked to consult on which laboratory test were needed to evaluate a patient with hypernatremia. Sure enough, I turned to the endocrinology section, found the appropriate text, and read off the correct tests to order; all the while sounding like a competent clinical pathologist. This experience highlights the easy accessibility of information and overall clinical usefulness of this book. Doody's Journal Review `Review from previous edition . . . the 'black bible' has been a very useful find. Written by active clinicians, this is a very practical book, extremely useful for a quick reference on the wards and one of the few pieces of medical literature that concentrates on investigations and how to interpret them.' Northwing (Sheffield Medical School Gazette) June 2004 `This book not only tells you which investigations to order in numerous clinical situations but how to interpret the results, which is all-important. It is written by clinicians, is wonderfully pragmatic and the last word on clinical investigation . . . Strongly recommended.' Dr Harry Brown 01/03/2003 Oxford Handbook of Clinical Examination and Practical Skills Hardcover: 704 pages Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA; 1 edition (July 12, 2007) Language: English ISBN-10: 019856838X ISBN-13: 978-0198568384 Product Dimensions: 7.2 x 3.9 x 1.2 inches Review This new book, which is part of the popular Oxford Handbook Series, is a must have for final year students and newly qualified foundation doctors. ... The use of colour illustrations showing the clinical signs strengthens the book as a core text for students. ... I have yet to read a book like this that encompasses clinical skills and practical skills. British Journal of Hospital Medicine, Vol 68, No 10, Product Description Your one-stop-shop for final examination, the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Examination and Practical Skills is the first truly comprehensive pocket guide to clinical examination and practical skills for medical students and junior doctors. Providing clear and user-friendly guidance on all aspects of history taking, physical examination, common practical procedures, data interpretation and communication skills, it gives realistic advice on coping with common situations. In line with current teaching methods, the book takes a systems-based approach to medicine. Each system chapter follows a structured format covering applied anatomy, history, examination, and the presentation of common and important disorders. The procedures section includes approximately forty practical procedures that the final year medical student and senior nurse are expected to perform, from hand-washing through cardiopulmonary resuscitation to inserting chest drains. The theory, practice and complications are outlined for each. The final section on data interpretation covers the basics of chest x-rays, abdominal x-rays, ECGs, lung function tests and several other areas that the junior doctor is expected to carry out in their early years of training. Aimed at medical students throughout their course and student nurses throughout their clinical years, its clear presentation and layout combined with comprehensive clinical detail make this book an ideal guide both for quick reference whilst on the wards, or for more detailed study at the desk. It will also prove useful to junior doctors and nurse practitioners as a primer before going out onto wards, or into a primary care setting Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine Turtleback: 892 pages Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA; 7 edition (February 15, 2007) Language: English ISBN-10: 0198568371 ISBN-13: 978-0198568377 Product Dimensions: 7.2 x 4.2 x 1.3 inches Review If you buy one book in medical school, make it the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine. Oxford Medical School Gazette ...only stethoscopes and hand gel match its ubiquity in hospital...[it] remains a medical classic. It moves with the ever-changing landscape of medicine, reminding us why we are all here, what we have learnt, and how much further we have to go. It is, in short, a guiding star. BMJ The seventh edition and 21st birthday says it all. BMA Medical Book Competition 2007 A new edition of a classic has hit the bookshelves...[and] it doesn't appear to have lost any of its magic - dare I say it may have become even better...This handbook is still packed with facts and brilliantly laid out, making it one of the best quick reference texts around...The authors have clearly not rested on their laurels - the many improvements keep this medical student favourite on the 'essential' list, and give it that competitive edge to maintain its prime position in the medical student pocket. GKT Gazette Review `Review from previous edition: Now in its sixth edition, the 'Cheese and Onion' (as it is known) continues to be the most popular handbook for both the undergraduate and the junior doctor on the wards... The reason this little book remains so popular is that most topics are covered succinctly on a two-page spread of the book, and coloured headings break up the text and provide a logical structure for readers of all levels. Not only has the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine aided in the diagnosis and treatment of countless patients, it has also helped thousands of students prepare and pass examinations. Size isn't everything, and that certainly is true here. Common clinical questions are answered clearly and extensively, while weird and wonderful conditions, which are rarely encountered, also get a good crack at the whip. They say the proof is in the pudding, and the fact that this book has sold more than a million copies worldwide speaks volumes.' Hospital Doctor February 2005 `This handbook goes from strength to strength as each edition keeps abreast of the breathtaking advances in clinical practice... It comes with the now familiar plastic flexicover which means it can take rough handling. It is ideal for junior hospital doctors, medical students and GPs and is packed with practical, easy to read advice... it is a huge topic and a bold task to cover it in such a small portable volume but like the preceeding editions, it manages this admirably well... It is packed with facts, knowledge and most important of all, it is an intensely practical book. If you are stuck on what to do next in managing a patient, this is the book to look up... There is no padding here; it is fact, solutions and advice all the way. All the information is very modern, relevant and presented in a highly readable format. It is ideal for both hospital doctors, GPs and their registrars and is superb value for money.' Dr Harry Brown December 2004 `This is one of the most useful books you can own if you are involved in the day-to-day management of patients and conditions... Get it! Now!' Surgo Magazine, Review `The new edition of the Oxford Textbook of Medicine has done well to present a distinguished array of contributors More importantly, the editors have managed to present a vast amount of information in an easy to read style and format. A selected student's opinion found many chapters in this new edition to be a definite improvement on the standard North American textbook in style, language, and presentation, particularly those dealing with medical problems in developing countries. The pictures included in the textbooks make many sections easy to read and comprehend.' The Lancet `The initial chapters on the science and art of medicine and on ethics are impressive and important reading for all physicians. Advances in critical review and evidence-based medicine are given due recognition in the second section of the book, which deals with the foundations of modern medicine. Indeed, this edition skilfully integrates evidence with expert clinical experience to provide an informed approach I must congratulate the editors for recognising the presence of alternative medicine and including a separate section on this topic.' The Lancet `It is an invaluable source of information, well written by experts in their respective fields. It will be the first reference source I choose when questions arise as I continue to practice medicine.' Doody's Journal `Can we have a broader view of ourselves again as gatekeepers of the health of populations? This is an issue that is intelligently addressed The coverage of the global burden of disease, preventive medical strategies, health policy, and costing are new and welcome additions. I found these sections to be especially thought-provoking and believe that they are valuable reading for all budding medical graduates, teachers, and researchers.' The Lancet `I would certainly vote for having the new edition in my department library.' The Lancet `This is the intellectual equivalent of a Jaguar coupe and inspires similar levels of envy.' Family Practice `The Oxford Textbook of Medicine has been regarded a sound reference book for the past twenty years, and this new, even more comprehensive, three volume edition just has to be one of the most authoritative textbooks available.'
