OPEN RANK SEARCH: POSTDOCTORAL OR ASSOCIATE RESEARCH SCIENTIST POSITIONS IN COMPUTATIONAL MINERAL PHYSICS Columbia University/Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory We are inviting applications for two Postdoctoral or Associate Research Scientist positions in computational mineral physics. The position is associated with the project entitled Modeling Earth from Atomic to Global Scale (MINERALS) funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Successful candidates should be experienced computational materials physicists/scientists with advanced skills in scientific computing. The first position¡¯s successful candidate should have extensive experience with ab initio and machine learning methods for materials simulations. Experience with one or more topics is most valuable: a) solid solution modeling, b) studies of strongly correlated oxides, c) calculations of thermodynamic and thermoelastic properties with phonons and/or molecular dynamics, d) advanced programming skills. The second position's successful candidate should have advanced computer science skills to a) advance software high-throughput methods for materials simulations, b) implement scientific workflows in ACCESS for mass production of ab initio results, and c) develop databases. A primary goal of this project is to develop a mineral properties database for geophysical modeling, particularly for the interpretation of seismic tomography models and their geodynamics investigation. Research activities will involve regular communication and collaboration with seismologists and geodynamicists on related aspects of the overall project and with a group of international contributors for database development. The ability to think and work across disciplinary boundaries is a plus. The position is funded initially for one year, with possible extensions of up to four years. They are available immediately and will remain open until they are filled. Applicants should send a CV, three recommendation letters, and a cover letter containing a research statement summarizing the candidate's past experiences. Applications should be submitted through the following websites: Position 1: https://academic.careers.columbia.edu/#!/154260 Position 2: https://academic.careers.columbia.edu/#!/154256 Candidates for the rank of Postdoctoral Research Scientist should have recently completed or be nearing completion of a PhD in computational materials/mineral physics or materials science. Salary $71,050 - $71,050. Candidates for the rank of Associate Research Scientist must have a PhD in computational materials/mineral physics or materials science and at least 2 years of relevant post-PhD experience. Salary $80,000 - $90,000. |
