[交流] UCL - PhD in Mechanical Engineering - Metamaterials

Graduate and/or Overseas Research Scholarship

We seek outstanding individual of any nationality to undertake PhD research at University College London through application to a UCL Overseas and/or Graduate Research Scholarship to work on one of the following research projects:

(a)Development of morphable 3D architected materials
The development of mechanical metamaterials has benefitted from the progress of reduced-scale manufacturing that has allowed the creation of architected materials with superior properties, enabling unprecedented applications in energy harvesting, electronics, biochemical sensors, etc. The project aims to characterise and develop highly nonlinear 3D micro/nanoarchitected materials for use in actuation. It will entail analytical/numerical analysis of representative unit cells and lattices, Bayesian optimization, micro- and nano-fabrication through additive manufacturing, and experimental validation at the micro- and nano-scale.

(b)Multifunctional microarchitected carbon lattices
Mechanical metamaterials are periodic three-dimensional architected solids designed at the micro and nanoscale to achieve unique, and advanced, properties not attainable by their constituent materials. One of the major challenges in metamaterial design is to simultaneously achieve enhanced mechanical properties, with complementary ones such as hydrophobicity, that are also amenable to rapid, scalable, fabrication. The main objective of the project is to achieve the combination of mechanical/complementary properties in a single scalable engineered material that can be employed for use in extreme environment. the research work includes numerical analyses, material development and characterisation, and experimental testing, in collaboration with Tohoku university.

(c)Enhancing damage tolerance through engineered metamaterials
The practical implementation of metamaterials with 3D micro- and nano-architectures necessitates a detailed understanding of their mechanical response to a wide range of loading rates. This project concerns the development of multiscale metamaterial panels for enhanced blast and fragment shielding. representative volume element will be studied theoretically to explore the deformation pattern and the energy absorption mechanism at the meso-scale. Results from the aforesaid will be introduced into numerical simulations (using mesh-free particle methods) at two concurrent scales with direct meso-scale simulation in the impact region and RVE homogenisation simulation in the far-field. predictions by the theoretical model and the numerical simulations will be validated experimentally using specimens manufactured by am technique.

Person specification: A background in mechanical/structural/materials engineering, or an equivalent discipline with a high technical/mathematical content, of any nationality. Aptitude for computational modelling and/or experimental work is essential. Applicants should be from a top-ranked university (based on ARWU, THE or QS ranking) and are expected to graduate at the top of their cohort. A research track record, demonstrated by publications in international journals, will greatly enhance the chances of success.

Application procedure: Applicants should write to both Prof PJ Tan (pj.tan@ucl.ac.uk) and a/Prof Federico Bosi (f.bosi@ucl.ac.uk) with a recent CV, area of interests/specialisation and a full transcript of exam results. Individuals who have yet to graduate must list all the modules (and corresponding grades) for which the results are known. Shortlisted candidates will go through an interview, followed by a preliminary round of departmental pre-selection; and, if successful, will be entered for university-level competition for the scholarships.

Closing Date and Start Date: All enquiries must be received by 3rd January 2025 (closing date). If successful, the start date of the PhD will be in Sept/Oct 2025.
Value of award: Full tuition fees and stipends (living expenses) for the duration of the doctoral research.
