Applied PhD Opportunity: Advancing Elite Cycling Aerodynamic Perfomance ====================================================== This project investigates cyclist aerodynamics under Michael Kingan at the University of Auckland. The funding will cover all fees and will provide a stipend of NZ$33,825 p/a with an annual inflation adjustment for 36 months. A further 6 months of funding may be available after 36 months. A more detailed description of the project is attached. The project will be primarily experimental and will utilise our department¡¯s wind tunnel. Michael will also work closely with athletes and technical staff from Cycling New Zealand. In particular, Dr Tim Crouch will help co-supervise the project. Tim has a very good background in cyclist aerodynamics and has quite a number of publications on the topic (e.g. https://www.researchgate.net/pub ... _aerodynamic_drag). Any interested candidate should please email michael to express their interest (m.kingan@auckland.ac.nz) and he will arrange a Zoom interview. he will hold interviews in mid to late January and select the candidate shortly thereafter. The project will involve: - working with CNZ Olympic & Paralympic athletes, sports engineers and physiologist (track cycling program focus); - experimental wind tunnel investigations into wake flows and aerodynamic drag measurement; - wind tunnel data correlation with velodrome track testing experiments; - interpretation and validation of CFD data sets using wind tunnel data; and - potential equipment manufacture collaborations to support CNZ systems engineering programs. The successful applicant will be supervised by Prof. Michael Kingan and by Dr Timothy Crouch, systems engineering lead at CNZ. The PhD candidate will have degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering degree and a sound understanding of fundamental fluid dynamic concepts.
