english version job description lao research lab (Environmental Control Materials (ECM) Lab) in the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering at syracuse university is recruiting highly motivated postdocs, graduate students and visiting scholars, starting from spring or fall 2025. lab information we focus on understanding the interaction among the human body, buildings and environment, and improving their performance by developing advanced materials and smart systems. we aim to design smart materials for thermal, moisture and air quality management for the human body and the built environment to maintain a comfortable level while reducing energy consumption. particularly, we use biomimetic approaches inspired by nature for the materials design and engineering based on polymers, fibers, textiles, soft materials, smart materials and advanced manufacturing. our research topics include but are not limited to: 1) design of smart materials (e.g., stimuli responsive materials, bio-inspired design, 3d printing), 2) personal thermal and moisture management (e.g., smart textiles, surface wettability, thermal regulation, directional liquid transport), 3) smart building and environment control (e.g., thermal regulation, ventilation control, air quality improvement). the lab is an interdisciplinary research group within the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering, college of engineering & computer science, syracuse university, and associated with syracuse center of excellence in environmental and energy systems (syracusecoe) and bioinspired institute. our research spans the fields of chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering and architecture. our goal is to contribute both scientific fundamentals and practical technologies to serve some global challenges such as human health, environment, energy and sustainability. pi information dr. lihong lao is an assistant professor in the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering in the college of engineering and computer science at syracuse university starting from fall 2024. she received b.s. and m.s. degrees in polymer science and engineering from zhejiang university, and a ph.d. degree in fiber and polymer science from cornell university. prior to joining syracuse university, she was a postdoctoral research associate in department of materials science and engineering at university of illinois urbana-champaign. prior to phd study, she was a chemist at the dow chemical company (china). dr. lao¡¯s research focuses on new functional materials and smart systems with tailored surface chemistries and properties. particularly, her research interests include polymers, fibers and textiles, soft materials, smart materials, bio-inspired design and advanced manufacturing for personal thermal and moisture management, and energy sustainability for the built environment. more information can be found: https://ecs.syracuse.edu/faculty-staff/lihong-lao qualifications we are now recruiting highly motivated postdocs, graduate students and visiting scholars. candidates with chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering and architecture background are highly encouraged to apply. particularly, candidates with the research experience in one of the following areas are preferred: • polymers chemistry and physics • fibers and textile materials • smart materials and soft robotics • advanced manufacturing • thermal science • building solutions • air quality control • energy sustainability if you are interested in joining us, please send your cover letter, cv and representative papers to dr. lao at llao02@syr.edu. • starting time: spring or fall 2025 • for phd applicants, a m.s. degree is preferred. more information about phd admissions and applications can be found at: https://ecs.syracuse.edu/admissions/graduate about syracuse university syracuse university is a private, international research university with distinctive academics, diversely unique offerings, and
