The research in the laboratory of Prof. Marie-Jean THORAVAL focuses on interfacial flows, including drops and bubbles. He combines experimental and numerical techniques to study their dynamics and extract simple theoretical modelling., The experiments are done using high-speed imaging cameras to capture some of their fine and fast evolutions. The numerical simulations use the open-source code Basilisk ( http://basilisk.fr/ ), solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a Volume-Of-Fluid (VOF) method on a dynamical adaptive grid.
His research has been published in top journals such as Science Advances, Physical Review Letters and Journal of Fluid Mechanics.
Prof. Marie-Jean THORAVAL obtained his Master degrees from Ecole Polytechnique (Paris, France) in 2007 and Supaéro (Toulouse, France) in 2008. He then pursued his PhD in Fluid Mechanics with Prof. Sigurdur T. Thoroddsen in King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia), from where he graduated in 2013.
From 2013 to 2015, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Physics of Fluids group in the University of Twente (The Netherlands), with Prof. Jacco Snoeijer, Prof. Frits Dijksman and Prof. Detlef Lohse. He then joined Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) in 2015 as a professor, where he received several national talent plans supports. He has joined the LadHyX laboratory in École Polytechnique since January 2023.
A detailed description of the projects can be found on the LadHyX website, as well as other internship, PhD and postdoc opportunities in Fluid Mechanics:
