Our research covers the sensing, computing, and communication capabilities required by a wide range of robotic platforms, including drones, robotic arms, teleoperated robots, robotic vehicles, and more. Area 1: With the emergence of 6G and AI, robotic systems face both unprecedented opportunities and complex challenges. A central question is how to meet the increasing demands for computing and communication resources needed for intricate robotic tasks. For example, enabling real-time object recognition in robots presents a dilemma: while offloading high-volume sensory data (such as point cloud data) to the cloud allows for rich computational power, bandwidth constraints limit this option. On the other hand, implementing AI on board introduces challenges related to accuracy and energy efficiency. Area 2: The CRLab has a special focus on telerobotics—an interdisciplinary field that bridges machine intelligence with human expertise. Unlike fully autonomous robots, which operate solely on machine intelligence, telerobotics integrate both AI and expert human knowledge. This approach not only complements traditional robotics but also revolutionizes human interaction with environments by enabling remote operations. Through telepresence, holographic objects can be experienced as though they are co-located, allowing people to interact safely and effectively from afar. Telerobotics holds particular promise for assisting vulnerable populations by removing physical barriers in complex tasks. Many challenges remain unsolved in telerobotics. Its success depends heavily on telecommunications and Internet infrastructure, yet the effects of network QoS on teleoperation performance and user experience are still not fully understood. Establishing a unified framework and standardized benchmarks is urgent—especially in fields like telesurgery, where high latency increases operational risks as well as fatigue and motion sickness for practitioners. |
