Fully Funded Ph.D. Positions Available at University of North Carolina Charlotte The Department of Biological Sciences at UNC Charlotte invites applications for two Ph.D. positions in Dr. Xiaojun Ren's laboratory, which focuses on epigenetics and genome regulation. The lab is seeking a highly motivated two Ph.D. students to join their research team. These positions offer an exciting opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research at the intersection of chromatin regulation, liquid-liquid phase separation, and single-molecule imaging. Research Areas and Projects • Liquid-Liquid Phase Separation in Chromatin Regulation and Transcription • Single-Molecule and Super-Resolution Imaging of Epigenetic and Chromatin Processes • Epigenetic Regulation in Cancers • Therapeutic Targeting of Epigenetic Modifications Qualifications • A B.S., B.A., or M.S. degree from an accredited university. • An overall, as well as science specific, grade point average a minimum of 3.0 out of 4.0. • A major within the biological sciences department or interdisciplinary areas of chemistry, biochemistry, nanotechnology, biophysics, bioengineering, biotechnology, kinesiology, and health sciences. • Undergraduate or previous coursework must include at least one course in each of the areas of genetics, physiology, and cell/molecular biology. Highly competitive applicants will have one year each of general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and college level mathematics. • The Graduate School requires a score of at least 83 on the Internet-based, 220 on the computer-based, or 557 on the paper-based TOEFL, or a minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS, for applicants whose native language is not English. About the Ren Research Group and University of North Carolina Charlotte Dr. Xiaojun Ren is the Irwin Belk Distinguished Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte). Before joining UNC Charlotte in August 2024, he served as a faculty member at the University of Colorado Denver. Ren's laboratory is a leader in epigenetic regulation research. His team was the first to show that Polycomb group (PcG) proteins form condensates via liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) (Tatavosian et al., JBC, 2019; Brown et al., Cell Reports, 2023; Kent et al., Cell Reports, 2020). The lab has also pioneered live-cell single-molecule tracking techniques to investigate the dynamics of epigenetic factors in vivo (Kent et al., Cell Reports, 2020; Tatavosian et al., Nature Communications, 2018; Zhen et al., eLife, 2016). UNC Charlotte, a public research university located in Charlotte, North Carolina, is recognized for its academic excellence.
