phd and postdoc positions at utk chemistry



PhD students
The Yingwen Cheng group at the Chemistry Department of UTK (the University of Tennessee at Knoxville) has several PhD student positions starting from either Fall 2025 or Spring 2026. Our group develops materials and interfaces for next generation batteries (aqueous, solid-state and beyond li-ion) and electrochemistry-driven chemical conversion (oxygen reduction, nitrate/nitrogen reduction etc.), with a particular emphasis on clarifying structure-properties-function relationships of the involved systems. We are also developing analytical tools and computation methods to examine reaction pathways. Most phd students in our group have opportunities to work on joint research projects with DOE National Labs, especially with the nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
We prefer students that earned Bachelor's degree from chemistry, physics, or a close-related field. previous experiences in electrochemistry, inorganic, polymer, analytical, colloidal and interfacial chemistry preferred but not required. we encourage you to learn about our research at our website at https://yingwencheng.org
PhD students are all supported by full scholarships that include annual salary of at least $31,000, full tuition waiver, and health insurance.

Postdoctoral researchers
The cheng group at the university of tennessee at knoxville is looking for several postdoctoral research associates to work on electrochemical processes for batteries and electrocatalysis. interested candidates are encouraged to learn more about our research via our publications at https://yingwencheng.org. Successful candidates should be trained in electrochemistry and have acquaintance with electroanalytical techniques. Prior experiences with electroanalysis, batteries, electrocatalysts, corrosion and nanomaterials are preferred, but not required.
