She was the 2002 President of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and is an AAPS fellow. She was recently elected Vice President of the Controlled Release Society and will be the 2009-2010 President. She is currently a member of the USP Biopharmaceuticals Expert committee and is a member of the USP Advisory Panel on Injectables. Dr. Burgess was an editor for AAPSharmsci (1999-2005) and is editor of the Journal of Drug Delivery Science and Technology (2003-present) and serves on the editorial boards of: the Journal of Pharmacy and pharmacology (1997-present); the Journal of Microencapsulationi (1997-present); Crital Reviewers in Therapeutic Drug Carrier Systems (2004-present); the International Journal of Pharmaceutics (2004-present); and the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology (2006-present). In 2001 she underook a sabbatical leave at the Office of Testing and Research at CDER, FDA. She consults for pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic and other engineering industries on issues related to dispersed systems, in vitro release testing, IVIVC, interfacial chemistry and particle size analysis. Professional Interests Dr. Burgess runs a multidisciplinary laboratory. Research efforts focus on drug delivery systems, in particular, nonoparticles, microspheres, emulsions, liposomes, hydrogels, and novel coatings for implantable devises as well as interfacial chemistry. Research interests include small molecule drugs, proteins, peptides and DNA therapeutics. Together with faculty in Chemistry (Dr. Fotios Papadimitrakopoulos) and Electrical Engineering (Dr. Faquir Jain), Dr. Burgess is developing a miniaturized, implantable biosensor for metabalic monitoring. The team is developing an implantable coating to control tissue response to implantable devices. Drs. Burgess and Papidimitrakopoulos are using quantum dots to investigate intracellular traficking of DNA therapeutics and vectors. Dr. Burgess' group is developing in vitro performance tests for controlled release parenterals products and has collaborations with both the Food and Drug Association (FDA) and the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). This work includes evaluation of in vitro and in vivo correlation (IVIVC) of controlled release parenterals and development of appropriate in vitro release testing methods. Other important research areas are investigation of both nanoparticle and emulsion stability using a variety interfacial techniques and particle size analysis.
