University of Virginia 诚招全奖博士后和博士研究生 --protein engineering/structural biology/synthetic biology The Bao research group focuses on the membrane biology of cell communication (Bao et al., 2016, NSMB; Bao et al., 2018, Nature; Zhang et al. 2021, Nat Commun; Xiong et al., 2022 Cell; Shin et al., 2024 Nano Let). Using a combination of biochemical reconstitution, cell biology and structural approaches, we seek to elucidate how membranes and membrane proteins regulate life and death. Based on the findings from our basic research, we are also interested in reprogramming membrane biology for therapeutic development against human disease. We strive to create a supportive environment that inspires learning, innovation, and passion for scientific discovery. People in the lab will have numerous opportunities to explore their own research interest. We emphasize rigorous training and open communication, and work as a team to tackle fundamental challenges in membrane biology. The lab is located in the Membrane Biology Center at the University of Virginia, with ample access to well-equipped imaging, flow cytometry and cryogenic electron microscopy cores in the same building. In addition, we are extensively collaborating with experts at UVA and across US to explore the utility of our tools developed with the support from the prestigious NIH Director’s Innovator Award. With several incoming grants from NIH and UVA, we are looking for multiple highly motivated postdocs in the following areas: 1) Structural membrane biology using cryoEM/ET; 2) Molecular mechanisms of membrane damage and repair; 3) Computational protein and peptide design; 4) Programming protein degradation and cell death; 5) Immune engineering with mRNA lipid nanoparticles against infections and cardiovascular diseases. Previous experiences in biochemistry, structural biology, protein design, animal models, nanomedicine or cell biology are preferred. Salary is commensurate with experience and expertise, ranging from 62K to 80K per year plus insurance and benefits. The University of Virginia is founded by the third president of US, Thomas Jefferson, in 1819 at Charlottesville, a beautiful college town close to Washington-DC and Virginia Beach, and one of the ten best places to live in US.
