No Offer Description We are seeking highly motivated candidates for a PhD position in computational materials science, supervised jointly by Dr. Juhan Matthias Kahk and Prof. Marco Kirm at the University of Tartu, and Prof. Johannes Lischner at Imperial College London. The position is based at the Institute of Physics, University of Tartu, the leading research university in Estonia and the Baltic region, and includes regular secondments to Imperial College London. Responsibilities The prospective PhD student will employ computational methods, including ab-initio electronic structure simulations, to investigate scintillators—materials that convert high-energy radiation like X-rays or gamma-rays into visible light. These materials are critical in medical diagnostic methods such as CT and PET scans, and in fundamental physics research. The project aims to discover new scintillator materials with ultrashort response times, enhancing the performance of PET scanners by improving spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. Qualifications Essential: - Master's degree or equivalent in Physics, Chemistry, or Materials Science. - Good computer skills. - Basic understanding of quantum mechanics and electronic structure theory (at an undergraduate level). - Excellent English language proficiency (minimum B2 level, C1 preferred). Recommended: - Prior programming experience. Not required: - Experience in electronic structure calculations is not expected.
