Energy Economics in the Smart Grid Concept

Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow - Energy Economics in the Smart Grid Concept De Montfort University - Institute of Energy & Sustainable Development (IESD) Fixed term for three years in the first instance £30,594 - £43,622 per annum Ref: 6280 The IESD is a research-led multidisciplinary group of specialists whose aim is to make a worthwhile and significant contribution to sustainable development through research, consultancy and education. Research to improve the energy efficiency and reduce the carbon emissions of buildings is a particular strength. A researcher is sought to work on an exciting £1.25M research project Complex Adaptive Systems, Cognitive Agents and Distributed Energy (CASCADE): a Complexity Science-Based Investigation into the Smart Grid Concept led by De Montfort University in partnership with Cranfield University – Complex Adaptive Systems, Cognitive Agents and Distribute Energy (CASCADE): a Complexity Science-Based Investigation into the Smart Grid Concept. The project runs for three years, and is funded by EPSRC under the Energy Challenges for Complexity Science programme. It has a number of other industrial and public body sponsors including E.ON UK and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research organisation (CSIRO), Australia’s national research agency. The aim of the CASCADE project is the development of an advanced agent-based modelling framework that will radically improve the technology represented by existing models of the electricity grid - including enhancement of technical, economic and end-user aspects of electricity supply - to enable the possible consequences of smart grid evolution to be assessed and disseminated to policy makers, service providers and end-users. The energy economist will work alongside acknowledged experts in the field of complexity science and agent based modelling and with fellow researchers working on the power systems and social science aspects of the project. The successful candidate will be responsible for a thorough review of the state of the art of aspects of economic science relevant to electricity grid modelling, smart grid technologies and agent based modelling techniques. ‘Economic science’ will be interpreted widely to include relevant theories and models considering, for example, market structure, consumer behaviour and investment strategies, possibly also economic psychology or social networks in a dynamic modelling context. They will ensure that the developed models incorporate best use of relevant state of the art economics and will also actively engage in modelling assisted by appropriate software. Participation in scenario design, testing involving end-users and deployment of the developed framework to answer specific research questions will also be required. The Research Fellow will prepare working documents, reports and academic papers that will flow from the research and attend international conferences and colloquia where appropriate. The posts will be for three years in the first instance, with excellent prospects for further extensions. A good first degree and a PhD or equivalent research experience are essential. These should be based on energy economics, agent-based modelling or a related area. Good knowledge of relevant state of the art economic theories and models, excellent quantitative skills and excellent report writing skills are essential. Previous research experience and excellent communication skills are important as are an interest in complexity science and a genuine aptitude for, and commitment to, sustainability research.
