A fully funded PhD Research Assistant (RA) position is available in Dr. Xing Wang's research group in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. The RDMaP (Radiation-induced Defects & Materials Performance) lab focuses on revealing fundamental defect physics in solid materials by combining advanced microscopy analysis and multiscale simulations. Our research goal is to unravel the intricate behaviors of materials under extreme environments and to spearhead the material development for future nuclear power and technologies. More information can be found at https://sites.psu.edu/rdmap/ We invite applications from prospective Ph.D. students for research areas including: • Characterization of radiation-induced defects in materials such as tungsten alloys for fusion, semiconductors for space applications, and steels for next-generation fission reactors, using techniques including transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography. • Development of automated defect analysis tools utilizing machine learning and high-throughput computations • Multiscale and multi-physics simulation on property degradation of nuclear materials We strongly encourage applicants with a background in Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, or Computational Sciences. Applications for PhD programs in either Nuclear Engineering or Materials Science and Engineering are acceptable. The application deadline is December 15, 2023. He is also a faculty member of Intercollege Graduate Degree Program in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He founded the RDMaP lab at Penn State in 2020, which now boasts a team of seven graduate students and one undergraduate student. In 2023, Xing received the Distinguished Early Career Program award from the U.S. Department of Energy. Xing holds a B.S. in Engineering Physics from Tsinghua University (2011) and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2016). His postdoctoral training was at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 2017 to 2019 before joining Penn State. |
