the department of civil and environmental engineering at case western reserve university invites applications for two phd student positions in environmental engineering, starting fall of 2024. dr. zhang’s research focuses on the fate and transformation of emerging organic contaminants in natural and engineered environments and advance water and wastewater treatment technologies based on physicochemical approaches. her recent research areas also include predictive modeling for contaminant reactivity and sorption using machine learning tools. dr. zhang has published in numerous journals, such as chemical reviews, environmental science & technology, and water research. she pioneered the application of ai/machine learning in environmental research and is a leading expert internationally in this field. for instance, her recent feature article entitled “machine learning: new ideas and tools in environmental science and engineering" received the “2021 es&t best paper award”. more information about dr. zhang’s research can be found at https://engineering.case.edu/profiles/hjz13.

applicants should have solid background in environmental science/engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, math/statistics, materials science or engineering, or a related field. experience with coding is a plus. the phd students will be fully supported by zhang’s research grants. the review process will begin immediately and continue until the positions are filled.

required qualifications:
- minimum gpa 3.0
- minimum toefl 90 or ielts 7.0
- an eared ms (preferred) or bs degree
- strong dedication to research excellence, having one first-authored journal article is preferred
- good communication skills
