Dr. Shi’s research focuses on evaluating existing emerging mobility technologies, such as automated, connected, and electric vehicles, and developing novel technologies through the utilization of field experiments and hardware-in-the-loop methodologies. His research integrates transportation engineering, control engineering, optimization, and data science. His works have been published in top transportation journals, e.g., Transportation Science, Transportation Research Parts B, C, & D, and so on. Dr. Shi is also the recipient of many competitive awards, e.g., the Anne Brewer Academic Scholarship from ITS Florida, the Neville A. Parker – Science & Technology Award from the Council of University Transportation Centers, and the U.S. Finalist Team for ITS World Congress - Global Innovation Competition. UWM has been classified as an R1 Research University with very high research activity by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. This classification is given to universities in the U.S. that engage in the highest levels of research activity. Milwaukee is the largest city in the state of Wisconsin and is located on the shores of Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes of North America. It is home to the Milwaukee Bucks, a formidable NBA team that ranked #1 in the Eastern Conference during the 2022-23 regular season. Milwaukee is also conveniently located near two major cities: Chicago (2 hours away) and Madison (1.5 hours away). Dr. Shi plans to recruit 2-3 highly motivated Ph.D. students from the civil program starting in the 2024 Spring or Fall semester in the broad area of advanced vehicle technologies and smart cities. The positions will be fully funded by research or teaching assistantships or fellowships. The applicants should demonstrate strong modeling, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities; and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Applicants with backgrounds in transportation engineering, computer science, optimization, and control theory are preferred.
