professors wei-chau xie and mahesh pandey, department of civil and environmental engineering, university of waterloo, are recruiting one to two ph.d. students in the following area: seismic analysis and design with applications in the nuclear power industry. the specific research topic is the seismic analysis of small modular reactors (smrs) considering soil-structure interaction.

the candidate should have graduated from a 211/985 university（双一流） and have already obtained a master's degree, with a strong background in structural engineering and geotechnical engineering. research experience in structural dynamics, random vibration, and soil-structure interaction at a master's degree level is most welcome.

the candidate can start in september 2024. the candidate must meet the minimum requirement of english proficiency for graduate study:

   wei-chau xie是加拿大滑铁卢大学结构工程杰出教授，安大略省专业工程师。长期从事工程结构抗震分析和设计、结构动力学和随机振动、工程系统可靠性和安全性分析等领域的教学和科研工作，在工程结构动力稳定性、结构动力学、结构抗震分析与设计等领域享有国际声誉。
   先后主持了多项国际和加拿大国内的重大科研项目，系统研究了结构动力稳定性、结构随机振动、核电站工程地震风险性分析等关键性科学技术难题。已发表sci收录的学术期刊论文100余篇，会议论文50余篇，发表学术专著3部。由剑桥大学出版社（cambridge university press）出版的《seismic risk analysis of nuclear power plants》为首部系统阐述核电站地震风险的学术专著；由剑桥大学出版社出版的《dynamic stability of structures》为首部系统阐述工程结构在确定和随机载荷下参数稳定性现代理论的学术专著，获得国际同行学者的高度评价；由剑桥大学出版社出版的《differential equations for engineers》被国际上很多知名大学选为指定教材。
