2-year Postdoctoral scholarship in developing mechanically exfoliated 2D transition metal dichalcogenide materials for LEDs
Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 54,000 students, more than 7,500 employees, and a turnover of around SEK 8 billion.
At the ?ngstr?m Laboratory at Uppsala University, there is an extensive experience in materials research for energy applications. Here is a world-class research environment for the development of new optical and optoelectronic materials with strong nodes in materials synthesis, thin film synthesis, nano- and micro-fabrication, materials optics, device physics, ion beam-assisted material analysis and modification, solid-state spectroscopy, X-ray and neutron scattering, and material theory. The research has established Uppsala University as a world leader in chromogenic matter, thin film solar cells, magnetism, and spectroscopic techniques, with many spinoff companies.
The position is located in the Division of Solid State Physics in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The division has a long tradition of research into functional materials for energy and environment-related applications, including pioneering work in electrochromism, thermochromism, photochromism, photocatalysis, and solar fuel research (https://www.materialvetenskap.uu.se/solid-state-physics/) with accumulated scientific citations exceeding 50,000. Research is now expanding into 2D monolayer, multilayer, heterostructure, and nanotechnology-based structures to manipulate light-material interactions and surface chemical properties of chromogenic and catalytic materials.
Project description:
Semiconductors devices are diffusely applied in our daily lives, from light sensors for environmental monitoring and intelligent city designs to the screens where we read and watch the news, as well as thermoelectric generators to recover waste heat. There is a growing interest in obtaining high-quality monolayer transition metal disulfides for optoelectronic applications. Surface treatments using a range of chemicals have proven effective in improving these materials' photoluminescence yield (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-021-26340-6). This project aims to introduce a new generation of LED devices by developing high-quality 2D semiconducting material.
Work duties:
Description of the work duties:
· Research and management of research projects within the area of the title, including mechanic and liquid exfoliation of 2D material, developing defect passivating protocols as well as optical and optoelectronic characterization of the materials.
· Perform other group and research-related tasks.
Requirements:
Applicants must have:
A Ph.D. degree within the field of Chemistry, Physics and Materials Science or other for the position relevant fields.
Documented experience in the preparation and characterization of semiconducting 2D materials, preferably related to 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs).
Good oral and written proficiency in English.
Desirable/meritorious in general: Experience with the fabrication of LED devices is additionally meriting. Furthermore, we are looking for a proactive, self-driven person, who is enthusiastic about carrying out ground-breaking research in an international research group. Creativity and strong motivation for experimental research are meritorious. It is important that the candidate is enthusiastic and able to demonstrate a results-oriented and problem-solving approach to achieve the experimental goals on time. Interest and skills in scientific writing, efficiency, and structured working methods as well as other good working methods are important.
Uppsala University values equal gender distribution and diversity. We are therefore happy to see applicants of all genders and with different birth backgrounds, functionality and life experience.
