|
Dr. Xin Wang will join the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alabama as an Assistant Professor in August 2023. Prior to joining the University of Alabama, Dr. Wang obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from Xi'an Jiaotong University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, respectively. She then pursued her doctoral studies at the University of California, Irvine under the supervision of Dr. Julie M. Schoenung. During her doctoral research, Dr. Wang primarily utilized advanced electron microscopy and micro-mechanical testing techniques to investigate the twinning deformation mechanisms in Mg alloys at the atomic scale. She also developed novel processing pathways for material strengthening and toughening through microstructural and interfacial design. Currently, she is conducting postdoctoral research at the University of California, Irvine, where she serves as a lead Postdoc, participating in multiple National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense funded research projects. Her research efforts are dedicated to exploring the microstructure, crystalline defects, deformation mechanisms, and advanced manufacturing technologies of structural materials, including high entropy materials and additively manufactured multi-materials systems. The team will primarily focus on the following research directions: • Materials design and processing (powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing, thin film deposition, etc.) • Micro- and nano-mechanical testing of complex materials and structures • (In-situ) electron microscopy to investigate material deformation, transformation and degradation under various external stimuli The research group currently has multiple openings for motivated undergraduate, master and Ph.D. students. We invite interested students majoring in materials science, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, physics, or related fields to send an email to: xinwang.mse@gmail.com. Please include your cover letter, CV, transcript, and TOEFL/IELTS/PTE scores (for international students) when contacting. For more information, please visit Dr. Wang’s personal website for more information: https://sites.google.com/view/xinwanglab. About University and the Department: The University of Alabama (UA), located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is a public research university founded in 1831. It serves as the flagship campus of the University of Alabama System and covers a vast area of 1,970 acres. UA is one of the oldest, largest, and most beautiful universities in the United States. It is classified as an R1 research university and, according to the 2023 U.S. News & World Report, its College of Engineering is ranked 99th nationwide. The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering offers B.S. and M.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering, and Ph.D. degree in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science. The Department is equipped with advanced facilities, including directional and high-speed solidification, suspension melting, sputtering, chemical vapor deposition, additive manufacturing, nano-indentation, thermal performance and thermodynamic property testing, and advanced material characterization capabilities. The Metal Casting Foundry boasts state-of-the-art metal melting and casting equipment and is one of the finest facilities in the United States for teaching, research, and serving the metal casting and processing industry. Moreover, UA is set to install two new cutting-edge TEM (including a Spectra 300 (S)TEM with aberration correction and a Talos F200i TEM), two SEM (Helios 5 Hydra CX DualBeam and Helios 5 UX), and the latest 3D atom probe equipment, the LEAP 6000 XR, in 2023. |
