Multiple Ph.D. Openings with Full-Scholarship

Position Description
The DREAM (Design Reasoning and Evolution for Advanced Manufacturing) lab at UIC has multiple PhD positions available immediately. DREAM lab focuses on the research of computational design and fabrication. Specifically, we aim to study the design problems occurring in the entire product lifecycle, from early-stage conceptual design to design modeling, simulation, realization, and fabrication. The core mission of the lab is to develop computational design approaches to tackle societal challenges in healthcare, energy, and climate change. As such, multiple positions will broadly be in the area of functional materials and devices design, design optimization, design for 3D printing, physics-informed and data-driven inverse design. Example research directions are programmable materials design and structure-property-processing relations understanding. For more information, please see Dr. Huang’s website: https://dream.lab.uic.edu/.

About UIC. Located in the heart of one of the world’s great cities, UIC is a vital part of the educational, technological and cultural fabric of the region. As Chicago’s only public research university with more than 33,000 students, 16 colleges, a hospital and a health sciences system, UIC provides students access to excellence and opportunity. More information can be found at https://www.uic.edu/.

Qualifications
DREAM lab is recruiting highly motivated PhD students with background in design and manufacturing. Ideal candidates are expected to have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, industrial Engineering, material science, data science, or closely related fields. It is desirable that the candidate has strong programming or materials characterization experience and is interested in additive manufacturing and outfitting a diverse multi-culture lab. Fluent communication skills (verbal, presentation, and writing in English) are required to enable effective interaction with technical peers, scholars, and sponsors.

Expected Start Time: Spring/Fall 2024. If you are interested in the positions, please send CVs and letters of intent (no more than one page) to Dr. Jida Huang: jida@uic.edu.
