Postdoctoral Researcher Recruitment Hosting Institute • The Department of Anesthesiology, Weill Cornell Medical College Position Summary The Systems Neuroscience Research Team, led by Dr. Jyun-you Liou, at the Department of Anesthesiology, Weill Cornell Medicine, is welcoming a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our dynamic team. We offer a unique opportunity to contribute to our cutting-edge research project - understanding the glia-neuron bidirectional interaction in tumor-associated epilepsy (TAE) using advanced calcium imaging techniques. Under the co-mentorship of our esteemed researchers, Dr. Theodore Schwartz & Dr. Catherine Schevon, you will have access to their extensive expertise and guidance, ensuring a rich and supportive research experience. This collaborative environment allows you to work alongside top-tier labs and establish connections with leaders in the field. International applicants are welcomed! (J1 visa sponsorship can be offered.) Collaboration Network Our extensive collaboration network will provide you with the opportunity to engage with renowned labs and expand your scientific network. Notable collaborators include: • The Schwartz Lab at Weill Cornell Medicine: Led by the esteemed Dr. Theodore Schwartz, this renowned epilepsy research lab will provide valuable insights and resources. Collaborating with the Schwartz Lab will allow you to delve into optical imaging and epileptic signal analysis, gaining exposure to clinical applications and translational epilepsy research. • The Canoll/Schevon/Gill Labs at Columbia University: Our main collaborators in this project, the Columbia neuro-oncology and epilepsy research team led by Drs. Peter Canoll, Catherine Schevon, and Brian Gill, will provide invaluable expertise and foster interdisciplinary collaborations. • The Vaziri Lab at Rockefeller University: We are supported by world-class neurotechnology and imaging researchers from the Vaziri Lab. By working closely with these distinguished labs, you will broaden your scientific skill set, learn from leading experts, and establish a solid professional network within the neuroscience community. Abstract of the project Glioma altered excitation/inhibition balance in neural tissues, resulting in seizures and interictal epileptiform discharges. These conditions often do not respond to antiepileptic drugs and negatively impact patient quality of life. Recent studies indicate that glioma growth can be stimulated by excitatory neuronal activity. To address both functional and oncologic aspects, we investigated a mouse glioma model and found that the mTOR inhibitor AZD8055 restores inhibitory function, reduces seizures, and normalizes GABAergic activity. We are currently looking for potential combination therapy using AZD8055 and the GABA transaminase inhibitor vigabatrin to achieve antiepileptic and oncologic effects. State-of-the-art Equipment and Facilities As a postdoctoral researcher in the Systems Neuroscience Research Team, you will have full access to the following equipment and resources that are worth more than USD 1 million! • A multiphoton microscope with 3-independent LASER beams that are capable of simultaneous fluorescent imaging, optogenetic manipulation, and molecular uncaging. • An advanced widefield epifluorescence microscope with a scientific CMOS camera that is capable of high-speed functional imaging at 100 frames per second with a full resolution. • A high-density electrophysiology system supports recording and stimulating up to 128 channels. • A miniaturized microscope that is capable of recording neuronal activity in freely behaving mice. • Several transgenic mouse lines that enable chemogenetic and optogenetic manipulation. • Dedicated space for full behavioral neuroscience studies. Requirements • An MD or Ph.D. degree in Neuroscience, Engineering, Biology, or any related fields. • Prior experience in neuroscience research, with a preference for candidates who have experience in calcium imaging, image processing, computational neuroscience, neurophysiology, or extracellular electrophysiology, but we welcome applicants with diverse backgrounds. Job Responsibilities • Maintenance and management of relevant cell lines. • Animal husbandry, maintenance, and behavioral training. • Acquisition of optical imaging and electrophysiology data (which may involve working in a dark room for approximately 2-4 hours per experimental session). • Histopathology. • Analysis of imaging and electrophysiological data. • Data storage and management. • Statistical analysis of experimental results. • Presentation of results in written (manuscript) and oral forms. • Coordination with collaborators and project progress management. • Periodic literature review and presentation. • Supervision and education of lab technicians and graduate students. Funding, Duration, Benefits, and Application This position is fully funded by Weill Cornell Medicine. It is a one-year position with an annual renewal. The salary will follow the WCM Stipend Policy (https://postdocs.weill.cornell.e ... mum-stipend-policy), with a possible additional stipend according to the postdoctoral researcher's funding status. Benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, and professional development opportunities, will be provided per Weill Cornell Medicine policies. Besides, you will enjoy sponsored Weill Cornell housing for postdoctoral researchers (https://housing.weill.cornell.ed ... ctoral-associates)! Enjoy New York City with a highly discounted housing rate! Application • Please send your resume/CV & statement to Dr. Jyun-you Liou (jyl9010@med.cornell.edu) |
