863先进能源技术领域专家组成员，国务院学科评议组成员。1994年荣获第四届中国青年科技奖，1995年获霍英东高校青年教授奖（研究类），1996年入选教育部跨世纪人才培养计划，1997年获国家杰出青年科学基金，1998年获霍英东高校青年教师基金，1999年入选中组部、国家人事部“百万人才工程”第一层次专家，同年当选教育部首批长江学者特聘教授（1999）。2002年获“陕西省十大杰出青年”称号。2004年12月被科技部授予国家重点实验室计划先进个人并获金牛奖，同年底以郭烈锦为学术带头人的学术团队被批准为教育部“长江学者和创新团队发展计划”的首批创新团队。2005年12月以郭烈锦为学术带头人的团队被批准为国家自然科学基金委创新群体获得资助。
现任国际传热传质中心（ICHMT）科学委员会Member，Corresponding member of the International Information Center for Multiphase Flow (ICeM)，International Partnership for Hydrogen Economy（氢能经济国际合作伙伴，简称IPHE）中国专家组专家，英国EPSRC海外评议专家，国际氢能学会会员，美国ACS会员。国家自然科学基金委员会工程热物理与能源利用学科专家咨询组专家，国家教育部科技委技术科学部学部委员兼工程一部副主任，中国工程热物理学会理事兼多相流专业委员会主任，中国力学学会多相流专业组副组长，中国可再生能源学会理事兼中国氢能学会副主委、中国氢能学会常委，中国沙漠化学会理事。国际学术期刊Int. J of Hydrogen Energy, Applied Thermal Engineering，International Journal of Engineering Systems Modelling and Simulation等Member of Editorial Board；《Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering Science中国化学工程学报（英）》、《Int Journal of Thermal Science》、《工程热物理学报》、《应用力学学报》、《西安交通大学学报》、《应用基础与工程科学学报》、《工程力学》和《化工机械》等8种学报的编委；多次担任大型国际学术会议学术委员会或组委会委员。
多年来，一直坚持以主要时间和精力在国内从事能源动力多相流热物理领域内的科学研究和研究生培养工作。作为主持人完成国家及省部级项目40多项，其中有国家重点基础研究发展规划（973）项目、国家自然科学基金重大项目、重点及面上项目，国家“九五”、“十五”海洋863项目等。获2007年度国家自然科学二等奖1项（第1完成人），2009年度国家技术发明二等奖1项（第1完成人）。2007年陕西省技术发明一等奖1项（第1完成人），2006年教育部自然科学一等奖1项（第1完成人），2003年陕西省自然科学一等奖1项（第1完成人）和1991、1996、1997、1998年国家教委（教育部）科技进步二等奖4项（第1、第2完成人各1项，第3完成人2项）。已授权及申报受理的国家发明专利16项（第1完成人）。成果为工业与国防部门应用并产生巨大节资与社会效益。已在国内外学术杂志和会议上发表学术论文200多篇，多次在国外著名大学作特邀/主旨报告。参加撰写并出版大型手册2部，其中第二版《化学工程手册》荣获1997年国家图书一等奖，独立撰写《两相与多相流动力学》学术著作1部。

A member of the 863 expert panel in advanced energy technologies and Discipline Review Group of State Department. Won the Fourth China Youth Science and Technology Award in 1994 and Fok Ying Tung Young University Professor Award (Study Class) in 1995. Be selected in the cross-century talent training plan of the Ministry of Education in 1996. Support by the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund in 1997 and Fok Ying Tung University Young Teachers Fund in 1998. Be selected in the first batch Distinguished Professor of Changjiang Scholar of ministry of education and first-level experts of "Millions of Talents Project" sponsored by the Organization Department of China and the State Ministry of Personnel in 1999. Awarded "Ten Outstanding Young Persons in Shanxi Province" in 2002. Awarded the advanced individual and Taurus Awards of the National Key Laboratory of Science and Technology program in December 2004.
