| Abstract: Using the technique of liquid-core optical fiber (LCOF), we measured the Raman scattering cross section (RSCS) on the stretching carbon-carbon(CC) vibrational modes of all-trans-β-carotene in carbon disulfide (CS2) at concentrations ranging from 10-6 to 10-11M. It was found that RSCS was extremely high in all-trans-β-carotene with decreasing concentration, and the absolute RSCS for C=C stretching modes of all-trans-β-carotene reached the value of 2.6×10-20cm2molecule-1Sr-1 at 8×10-11M larger than at 8×10-6M for four orders of magnitude. A tentative theory interpretation of the anomalously experimental results was given, which introduced a qualitative nonlinear model of coherent weakly damped electron-lattice vibrations in structural order of all-trans-β-carotene. |

Raman scattering cross section (RSCS) of the stretching carbon-carbon(CC) vibrational modes of all-trans-β-carotene in carbon disulfide (CS2) was measured as a function of the concentration of all-trans-β-carotene, using the technique of liquid-core optical fiber (LCOF). It was found that the magnitude of the RSCS increases sharply with decreasing the concentration of all-trans-β-carotene, manifested by 10,000 times larger than that at 8×10-6 M for the RSCS magnitude of 2.6×10^(-20) cm2 molecule-1Sr-1 at a concentration of 8×10-11 M. A theoretical model was given for this observed abnormality. |
