Project Title: Polylactic acid fermentation, synthesis, modification and recycling
Project Description:
Polylactic acid (PLA) is the most feasible and promising biopolymer to replace petroleum-based
plastics, because of its abundance, outstanding mechanical performance, and high chemical
resistance. Up to now, nearly all PLA is produced from corn starch and sugar cane fermentation,
which compete with food production and results in shortage and high cost. Therefore, this project
will investigate cellulose-rich waste (e.g. cardboard, agricultural waste, etc.) as the fermentation
feedstock for lactic acid synthesis. Lab-scale lactide and PLA polymerization will be carried out.
Controlled degradation and composting of PLA will be investigated.
Polymer, Recycling, Industrial, Sustainability and Manufacturing (PRISM) at the Technological
University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (TUS) in Ireland has a core focus on polymer material
research, thermoplastic composites, product design, and renewable materials in addition to
providing contract and bespoke testing for industrial partners. Dr Yuanyuan Chen is a principal
investigator in biodegradable polymer synthesis, modification, and recycling. Dr Andy Fogarty is a
senior lecturer in ecotoxicology and microbiology and Prof. Clement Higginbotham is a senior
chemist at TUS. The PhD candidate will work with the existing team and be trained in the full life
cycle of PLA, including microbial fermentation, polymer synthesis and characterization, and end-oflife degradation. This scholarship covers a PhD stipend of €1000 per month, Postgraduate Fees of
€5750 per year, and a materials/travel budget of €1500 per year, for 4 years (48 months).
