Structural and micromechanical characterization of hierarchical nanoporous metal • The Experimental Materials Mechanics Department of the Institute of Materials Mechanics at Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon is offering a 3-year PhD position in the area of experimental materials mechanics. The place of employment is Geesthacht (~30km away from Hamburg), Germany. The salary is 75% TVL-13 (see https://oeffentlicher-dienst.info/tv-l/allg/). YOUR TASKS • Milling hierarchical nanoporous metals or alloys into microscopic samples such as micropillars and beams by means of focus ion beam (FIB). • Microstructure characterization (using scanning and transmission electron microscopies as well as x-ray small angle scattering) and micromechanical experiments (using nanoindentation) • Understanding the structure-mechanical property correlation, deformation and failure mechanisms of hierarchical nanoporous metals, and exploring chemo-mechanical coupling in nanoporous metal-based hybrid materials systems • Publication and presentation of your scientific results in peer-reviewed journals and at international conferences • Work towards pursuing a doctorate YOUR PROFILE • Masters degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Nanoscience, Physics, Chemistry or related area from an internationally recognized academic institution • Knowledge and practical experience in the fields of materials mechanical behavior, materials characterization, metallurgy or electrochemistry is considered an asset • Ability to present scientific contexts to an international audience of experts in a comprehensible and convincing manner, both verbally and in writing in English • Willingness and ability to work in a team with an international group of scientists OUR OFFER • We offer you the opportunity for scientific qualification for a PhD • You will work in an internationally visible research team • You will benefit from the opportunities for cross-department and interdisciplinary interaction with your colleagues in the Collaborative Research Center 986 and its Graduate School • You will have the opportunities to present your work at national or international conferences and meetings For further information please contact Prof. Dr. Shan Shi, Email: shan.shi@hereon.de or shan.shi@tuhh.de .
