A postdoc position in neuroimmunology is available at Dr. Qi Yang’s laboratory at Rutgers University. This postdoc project focuses on exploring the function and regulation of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) in the brain and associated brain barrier tissue. Unlike circulating blood-born immune cells, a group of immune cells reside in non-lymphoid tissue such as various vital organs. These tissue-resident immune cells are capable of constitutively secreting various effector molecules, thus altering the surrounding microenvironment and influencing tissue homeostasis and organ function. Development and function of these tissue-resident immune cells, however, remain largely mysterious. The newly discovered innate lymphoid cell (ILC) family are comprised of several major subsets that are enriched in non-lymphoid vital organs. Dr. Yang was among the first to discover and to characterize the ILC family in 2010; during which period Dr. Yang’s first authors papers on ILC biology were published in Nature Immunology, Immunity and other cutting-edge journal (Immunity, 2013, 38: 694, Nat Immunol. 2015, 16:1044). Dr. Yang established her own laboratory in 2016, and since then the Yang Laboratory has performed pioneer research in understanding the ILCs in the brain. Her laboratory discovered the presence of ILCs in the brain barriers, revealed the roles of ILCs in affecting learning, memory, and explored how dysregulation of these cells contributes to the pathogenesis of dementia. A cutting-edge paper in JEM on this topic was published in JEM in 2020 (J Exp Med (2020) 217 (4): e20190915.), and another major manuscript is currently under revision with Nature Immunology. The Yang laboratory is a young, energetic and rising team. We sincerely invite postdoc candidates interested in neuro-immunology to explore your ideas and talents in this exciting field. Dr. Yang is committed to the career and academic success of the postdoc fellow. The postdoc fellow is encouraged to pursue an academic career, although industrial and other alternative career options will also be supported. Extensive training for grant writing and opportunities for academic networking will be provided to postdocs interested in the academic career. The postdoc fellow is welcome to take any ideas and reagents, developed during the postdoc training period, to establish his/her own lab.
