Job title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Oregon Health & Science University The Gibbs Laboratory in the School of Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon, USA is recruiting several talented and motivated chemists with strong background in synthetic organic chemistry or medicinal chemistry to work on development of novel fluorescence technology to improve surgery. Our team is actively working towards the development of novel fluorophores to highlight both tissues to be resected (e.g., cancer) and structures to be preserved (e.g., nerves) to improve surgical outcomes for patients. The Gibbs laboratory is well supported by the NIH and engages in a range of studies with clinicians and industry partners to develop novel fluorescence imaging technology to improve medicine. We are looking for skilled, motivated synthetic chemists to join our multidisciplinary team (chemists, biologists, engineers, surgeons, computational scientists.) to contribute to our highly translational projects. The postdoctoral fellow will carry out research focused on the design, synthesis, and testing of novel fluorophores and fluorophore labeled ligands for surgical guidance. The candidate will employ conventional organic synthesis and develop new synthetic strategies to prepare the proposed small molecules. The ideal candidate will be willing to learn new methods and techniques, and able to manage multiple projects with a primary focus on the chemical space. There are a variety of training opportunities in this fellowship, from relevant biological and biomedical engineering skillset (e.g., cell culture, fluorescence imaging, tissue microscopy, small animal handling, surgery, image analysis, etc.) to individual professional growth (e.g., manuscript drafting, conference presentation, grant writing, clinical translation project managing, etc.). Applicants should submit a cover letter explaining their interests and career trajectory, a CV, and a list of references. Lab PI: Dr. Summer Gibbs Dr. Summer Gibbs is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), and has cross appointments in the Knight Cancer Institute at OHSU. Dr. Gibbs received her Ph.D. in biomedical engineering at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College in 2008 and completed her post-doctoral training in the Center for Molecular Imaging at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Harvard Medical School in 2012. Her laboratory focuses on novel fluorescent probe development for improved macroscopic and microscopic imaging applications with special focus on tissue- and disease-specific fluorophores for image-guided surgery, methods for multicolor microscopy and fluorescent technologies to predict therapeutic efficacy for personalized medicine. Dr. Gibbs has over a decade of experience developing fluorescence-guided surgery technologies both preclinically and in clinical use and is a leader in the field of nerve-specific fluorescence imaging.
