Two-dimensional (2d) materials are promising candidates for a broad spectrum of energy applications including (photo)electrocatalytic hydrogen/oxygen production and utilization, solar cells, batteries, thermoelectric devices, supercapacitors and piezoelectric energy harvesting. such a wide range of energy applications can be targeted thanks to the chemical stability, readily tunable electronic properties, mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, suitable reactivity, and large surface area that these materials can achieve. in addition, the properties of 2d materials can be carefully controlled by engineering defects, stains, and components to optimise their energy conversion efficiencies through atomistic simulation and modelling. the interest in this hot topic motivates this special issue in the 'journal of physics: condensed matter', which is to cover recent progress and trends in computer-aided design of advanced 2d materials for energy applications.
