The mechanical properties of various plastics are very different, and they are not compatible with each other. Therefore, the waste plastics have to be sorted before effective recycling. The candidate is expected to investigate the segregation of e-waste plastics based on the measurement of the amount of hetero elements by Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS). In a first step, the relevant materials and toxic components to be studied will need to be defined to prepare relevant samples for LIBS analysis, including the concentration range of elements of interest and their spectroscopic characteristics. A laboratory-scale dynamic LIBS set-up will need to be built on the basis of specifications from CEA experts and bibliographic review work. The set-up will be employed for the feasibility study and identification of materials. Advanced data processing will be applied to achieve a robust identification method. In the third year of the project, the LIBS set-up will be adapted to make a first demonstrator considering technological aspects for a future implementation of an online system, integration of data processing for toxic element detection, and tests on samples taken from a plastic sorting process. |
