The particle size, which was in the range of 0.8-10 μm, varied with the composition of polymer. An increase in the PEG content as well as the PEG molecular weight resulted in a proportional increase in the particle size. The entrapment efficiency of BSA was found to be associated with the proportion of PEG segments in the copolymer backbones. The rate of in vitro degradation of polyanhydride microspheres depended on their composition, increasing when the PEG segments of the microspheres increased. Furthermore, the composition of the microspheres affected protein release: the rate of release increased as the amount of PEG within the microspheres increased. Firstly, the particle size of 0.8-10 μm varied with the composition of polymer. Secondly, the particle size was enlarged with the increase of the content and molecular weight of PEG. Moreover, the entrapment efficiency of BSA was found to be associated with the proportion of PEG segments in the copolymer backbones. Meanwhile, the PEG segments of the microspheres increased with the rising rate of degradation of polyanhydride microspheres in vitro, which is depended on their composition. Furthermore, protein release was affected by the composition of the microspheres. The release rate increased as the high amount of PEG within the microspheres. As is mentioned above, it is suggested that the PEG-containing polyanhydrides may be optimized as carriers in protein delivery system for different purposes.
